Chapter 18 - THE KEY IN THE VAULT

Down in the subterranean darkness of the wine cellar, behind three inches of reinforced titanium, Sophie and Emma sat on the floor of the safe room.
The security monitors on the wall flickered. Emma was watching the live feed from the foyer, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She saw Daniel pinned to the chair. She saw Victoria giving orders. And she saw the two men carrying a heavy, industrial cutting torch down the stone steps toward their door.
"Emma?" Sophie whispered, clutching Emma’s hand. "Are they going to hurt Dad?"
Emma looked at Sophie. The ten-year-old girl was terrified, her body shaking, but in her eyes, Emma saw something extraordinary: the same defiant spark that had lived inside Claire, and the same quiet strength Daniel had built over seven years of redemption.
"No, Sophie," Emma said softly, her mind working at a lightning pace. "They aren't going to hurt him. Because we aren't going to let them."
Emma reached into her pocket. She pulled out the small, brass key that Daniel had given Sophie from the blue box—the key to the private, secondary security circuit installed by Claire’s estate executors.
"Sophie, do you remember what your dad told you about this key?" Emma asked urgently.
"He said it opens Box 37," Sophie whispered. "He said it was my mother's secret."
"It doesn't just open a box at the bank, Sophie," Emma said, pointing to a small, brass-rimmed keyhole hidden behind a vent near the floor of the safe room. "Your mother knew Victoria Vance-Sterling. When this house was built, Claire installed a separate fire-suppression and containment system that bypasses the main security grid. If we turn this key... what does it do?"
"It seals the wine cellar from the outside," Sophie said, her eyes widening as memory clicked into place. "And it floods the upper corridors with halon fire-suppression gas."
"Halon gas displaces oxygen within forty seconds," Emma said, her voice deadly steady. "It will knock out everyone in the foyer without killing them. But Daniel is up there. If we trigger it, Daniel will pass out too. We have to get to him before the mercenaries recover."
Suddenly, a loud, screeching hiss echoed through the steel door. Sparks began to shower around the frame as the thermal lance touched the titanium hinges. The metal began to glow cherry red.
They had less than sixty seconds.
"Sophie," Emma said, placing the brass key into the young girl's hand. "You were three years old when I made that recording. You were helpless then. You are not helpless now. Are you ready to save your father?"
Sophie looked at the glowing red steel door. She swallowed hard, wiped the tears from her cheeks, and gripped the key tightly.
May you like
"Yes," Sophie said firmly.
