Chapter 9 - Chloe’s Price

In the private penthouse office overlooking the city, Elena Sterling sat behind the massive glass desk that had once belonged to her husband.
She was still pale, her body still fighting the trauma of major surgery and profound grief, but she sat with the absolute majesty of an empress holding court. Beside her, Victoria Sterling sat comfortably in an armchair, sipping black tea, while two corporate auditors stood quietly in the corner.
Sitting on the other side of the desk, trembling so violently her teeth were chattering, was Chloe Davenport.
Chloe looked nothing like the glamorous, arrogant executive who had sipped five-thousand-dollar wine on the Napa terrace twenty-four hours earlier. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, her makeup was smeared, and she was clutching her designer handbag as if it were a life raft in a hurricane.
"Mrs. Sterling... Elena... please," Chloe sobbed, her voice cracking. "I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know you were in danger! Julian told me you were just being dramatic! He told me you always faked medical issues to keep him from traveling!"
Elena didn't blink. She watched Chloe the way a falcon watches a field mouse.
"Did he?" Elena asked, her voice soft and dangerously quiet.
"Yes! He said you were obsessed with controlling him!" Chloe cried, leaning forward across the desk. "He told me your marriage had been dead for two years! He said the baby was just an attempt by your family to trap him into staying CEO! I was stupid, Elena! I believed him! I was young and ambitious and he took advantage of me!"
Victoria let out a sharp, scoffing laugh from her armchair. "Twenty-six is old enough to know the difference between ambition and being a home-wrecking thief, young woman."
Chloe shrank back, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Please don't send me to prison. The federal agents... they were waiting at my apartment! They said I’m an accessory to wire fraud because of the Miami penthouse!"
Elena rested her chin on her steepled fingers.
"You are an accessory, Chloe," Elena said smoothly. "Under federal law, accepting assets acquired through embezzled corporate funds makes you a co-conspirator. The mortgage fraud alone carries a statutory minimum of five years in a federal penitentiary."
Chloe dropped to her knees right in front of Elena's desk, pressing her hands together in desperate prayer. "I'll do anything. Please. I’ll give back the penthouse! I’ll give back the jewelry! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just don't let them take my life away!"
Elena looked down at the girl. There was no pleasure in her eyes. Only the cold, transactional logic of a woman who had already lost everything that truly mattered.
"You have something Julian doesn't know you have," Elena said.
Chloe blinked through her tears, confused. "What... what do you mean?"
"Julian didn't just ignore my phone calls in Napa," Elena said, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "Julian is a narcissist. Whenever he pulls off what he thinks is a masterstroke, he talks. He brags. And you, Chloe... you are an ambitious girl. You never trusted Julian to protect you in the long run. You kept insurance."
Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted away.
"You recorded him," Elena stated, not as a question, but as a proven fact. "In Napa. While I was bleeding on the floor."
Chloe swallowed hard, terror gripping her chest. She realized in that instant that Elena Sterling was not just smarter than Julian; she was ten steps ahead of every player on the board.
"I... I have voice memos on my private cloud," Chloe confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "He was drunk on the terrace after dinner. He was laughing about your text messages."
"Play it," Elena commanded.
With trembling hands, Chloe pulled out a secondary, unmonitored smartphone from her bag. She navigated to an encrypted voice memo app, selected an audio file timestamped *Yesterday, 5:42 PM*, and placed the phone on Elena’s desk.
She tapped play.
The speaker crackled, and then Julian’s smooth, arrogant voice filled the office, accompanied by the clinking of wine glasses and the background hum of the Napa Valley breeze.
*“Can you believe her?”* Julian’s recorded voice laughed, slurring slightly from the wine. *“Five calls in four minutes. She’s probably lying in bed crying because she wants me to rub her back. Let her wait. Let her see what happens when she tries to command me. By the time I go back on Monday, she’ll be begging on her knees for my attention. That’s how you handle women like Elena, Chloe. You break their spirit until they have nothing left but you.”*
Then came Chloe’s recorded giggle: *“You’re terrible, Julian.”*
*“I’m not terrible,”* Julian’s voice replied with cold amusement. *“I’m the king.”*
The recording clicked off.
Silence, thick and suffocating, descended over the penthouse office.
Victoria turned her head away, her knuckles white as she gripped her ebony cane, tears of shame welling in her eyes for the monster she had given birth to.
Elena did not cry.
She reached out and slid Chloe’s phone across the desk, picking it up and handing it to Marcus, who had just re-entered the room.
"Upload that to the Department of Justice case file," Elena said. "And forward a copy to every major media outlet in North America."
Marcus nodded. "It will be on the evening news in an hour."
Elena looked back down at Chloe, who remained curled on the floor, waiting for her sentence.
"Your cooperation is noted, Chloe," Elena said. "The corporate attorneys will not seek criminal charges against you for the wire fraud."
Chloe gasped, a sob of relief bursting from her chest. "Thank you... oh God, thank you—"
"However," Elena continued, her voice cutting through the girl's relief like a blade, "all assets purchased with company funds are forfeited immediately. You have two hours to vacate the Miami property. Your professional PR licenses in California and New York will be revoked under ethics violations filed by our legal team. And if you ever set foot within five hundred feet of my family again, I will personally fund the federal prosecution that puts you in a cage."
Elena leaned back in her chair.
"Get out of my sight."
Chloe scrambled to her feet, stumbling over her own heels as she fled the office, the heavy double doors slamming shut behind her.
Elena turned her chair toward the panoramic windows. The city of Los Angeles sprawled out beneath her, a vast sea of concrete and glass, gleaming under the bright afternoon sun.
"It is done, Elena," Victoria said softly from behind her. "You won."
Elena looked down at her lap. Her hands rested over her flat, banded stomach.
May you like
"Nobody won, Victoria," Elena whispered into the glass. "Nobody won."
