Chapter 5 - The Glass House Shatters

Julian was unraveling at the seams.
His designer sweater was wrinkled, his hair disheveled from the desperate, three-hundred-mile drive south after his private jet was grounded in Napa. He had rented a car under Chloe’s personal credit card, driving through the night like a lunatic, his phone blowing up with hundreds of alerts from creditors, business partners, and media outlets.
When he reached the executive lobby on the fiftieth floor, four private security guards in black tactical gear barred his path, their arms crossed over their chests.
Behind them stood Elena.
She stood motionless in the open doorway of the boardroom, her face completely expressionless, looking down at him as if he were an uninvited stray dog that had wandered into a palace.
"Elena!" Julian shouted, trying to push past the guards, but the lead security officer shoved him back with a palm to the chest, sending him stumbling across the polished terrazzo floor.
"Julian," Elena said calmly. "You are trespassing on private corporate property."
"Trespassing?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "I am the CEO of this company! You can't do this! This is an illegal coup! I don't care what obsolete piece of paper your father made me sign eight years ago—I will sue you into oblivion! I will drag you through every federal court in this country!"
Elena didn't raise her voice. She took two deliberate steps forward, her heels clicking against the stone with the finality of a ticking clock.
"You won't sue anyone, Julian," she said softly. "Because by noon tomorrow, you won't have enough money to retain a public defender."
Julian’s eyes darted wildly, searching for any sign of the compliant, desperate wife who had begged him for a baby, the woman who had spent months crying in dark bedrooms after failed hormone cycles.
"Elena... look at me," he pleaded, suddenly shifting his tactics, his tone morphing from rage into desperate manipulation. "You're grieving. You’re in shock. What happened to our baby... it’s tragic. It’s an unspeakable tragedy. I was devastated when I got the message! I drove through the night to be with you!"
"Devastated?" Elena’s lip curled into a look of disgust so profound it made Julian take a step back. "You were drinking five-thousand-dollar wine with Chloe Davenport while our son suffocated inside me."
"I was working!" Julian lied, his voice climbing an octave. "It was a confidential resort development! Chloe was there as PR support! I didn't know your contractions were real, Elena! You had false alarms for three weeks—how was I supposed to know this was different?!"
Elena felt a sharp, burning spasm rip across her lower abdomen, right where the surgical staples held her flesh together. She closed her eyes for a single fraction of a second, feeling the ghost of her child’s heartbeat against her ribs, and then looked back at the monster standing before her.
"You knew," Elena whispered. "Because when I was bleeding out on the bathroom floor, I didn't call the concierge. I didn't call the doctor. I called my husband. Five times. And you sent me four words."
She stepped closer, stopping just inches from the security line.
"*Can this wait?*" she quoted, her voice dripping with ice. "That was your answer to the death of our child, Julian. So no. It cannot wait. Your reign ends tonight."
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. The mask of the loving husband fell away completely, revealing the cold, predatory narcissist underneath.
"You think you won?" Julian hissed, baring his teeth. "You think you can run this company without me? The banks lend to *me*, Elena. The institutions trust *me*. You are a ghost. You've been sitting in a nursery playing with stuffed animals for three years! You don't have the stomach for this business anymore! The board will turn on you the moment the markets open!"
A slow, terrifying smile appeared on Elena’s lips.
"The board already voted, Julian," she said. "Ten minutes ago. Unanimous termination."
"They can't!" Julian yelled. "Gordon would never vote against me!"
"Gordon was the first to raise his hand," Elena replied. "Right after I showed him the audit files on Aegis Development."
Julian froze. His skin turned a sickly shade of gray. The swagger, the arrogance, the desperate posturing—all of it evaporated in an instant.
"How... how do you know about Aegis?" he stammered, his voice reduced to a dry rasp. "Those records were sealed in an offshore trust. No one had the encryption keys. No one except..."
His eyes widened in sudden, horrifying comprehension. He looked past Elena, through the glass walls of the boardroom, toward the figure standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The man turned around.
He was tall, impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, adjusting his platinum cufflinks with practiced precision.
Julian felt the floor fall out from beneath his feet.
"Marcus?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a level of betrayal he had never conceived of. "You?"
Marcus Vance walked slowly out of the boardroom, stepping up beside Elena. He looked at Julian not with anger, but with the cold detachment of a surgeon observing a tumor that had just been excised.
"Hello, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "Did you really think I spent the last four years helping you set up offshore accounts because I respected your intellect?"
Julian swayed on his feet, reaching out blindly to grab the edge of the security desk to keep from falling. "You... you were my best friend. You were the best man at my wedding!"

"I was Elena’s cousin first," Marcus answered, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "And my father made me promise to watch you the day you took her family’s money. We knew who you were from the beginning, Julian. We were just waiting for you to prove it."
