Chapter 8 - Stripping the Emperor Bare

By ten o’clock that morning, the corporate collapse of Julian Sterling had turned into a media bloodbath.

Every major news outlet in the Western world had picked up the story. The *Wall Street Journal* ran a front-page headline: **THE FALL OF JULIAN STERLING: HOW ELENA VANCE RETOOK HER EMPIRE.** CNBC had dedicated an entire morning panel to dissecting the 60% voting coup, while financial analysts noted that instead of crashing, Sterling Crest stock had actually surged seven percent in early trading—Wall Street was breathing a collective sigh of relief that Elena Vance, the true architect of the firm’s golden era, was back at the helm.

Meanwhile, Julian was sitting on the curb of an abandoned strip mall in Glendale, looking like a derelict.

He had been stripped of his corporate phone. His personal American Express cards had been chopped up by the front desk of his own building. When he had attempted to take an Uber to his country club, the ride-sharing app had declined his transaction. His driver’s license was inside the wallet he had dropped during his arrest at the tower, and when he had tried to enter the twelve-million-dollar Bel-Air mansion, four armed private security contractors had met him at the gate with loaded shotguns and a restraining order signed by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.

His empire was gone. His home was gone. His pride was obliterated.

Just then, a sleek, black Maybach pulled up to the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the harsh midday California sun.

The rear door opened.

Marcus Vance stepped out, his posture effortless, holding a single manila envelope.

Julian scrambled to his feet, his clothes stained with street grime, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Marcus! Marcus, thank God! Did she calm down? Did Elena realize she needs me to manage the institutional lenders?"

Marcus looked at him with an expression of mild pity, the way one might look at an insect struggling in a spider’s web.

"Elena doesn't need you for anything, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "In fact, three sovereign wealth funds from Singapore and Abu Dhabi just signed term sheets to refinance all of Sterling Crest’s revolving credit facilities directly under Elena’s personal signature. The market knows you were just the hood ornament. She was the engine."

Julian clutched his head in his hands, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "What is that?" he pointed at the envelope. "A settlement? Tell me she left me something. The Aspen property? The Miami penthouse?"

Marcus handed the envelope to Julian.

Julian tore it open with shaking hands, pulling out a sheaf of legal instruments.

"The Aspen house," Marcus explained, "was purchased using funds routed through Aegis Development. As of eight o’clock this morning, the Department of Justice placed a federal civil asset forfeiture lien on the property. The Miami penthouse? The deed was in Chloe Davenport’s name, but the mortgage was backed by a corporate indemnity from Sterling Crest. Elena invoked the morals clause in Chloe’s contract and canceled the corporate guarantee. The bank is foreclosing on Monday."

"What about the Bel-Air estate?!" Julian shrieked. "That house is under our joint name! She can't kick me out of my own primary residence!"

Marcus gave a dry chuckle. "Read page four, Julian."

Julian flipped frantically through the pages until his eyes landed on a deed deed transfer covenant from 2018.

"When you borrowed forty million dollars from Elena’s family trust to buy your custom art collection," Marcus said, "you pledged your equity stake in the Bel-Air estate as primary collateral. Because you failed to make the required quarterly interest payment at midnight last night, the collateral transferred automatically."

Marcus stepped closer, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal murmur.

"Elena doesn't want the house, Julian. She finds the marble floors... distasteful."

Julian looked up, his jaw slack. "What is she doing with it?"

"She donated it this morning," Marcus replied. "The entire twelve-million-dollar estate has been deeded to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. It will be demolished next month to build a specialized neonatal intensive care and maternal trauma recovery wing."

Marcus paused, letting the words sink directly into Julian’s marrow.

"It will be named the *Alexander Vance Center*. After the son you left to die."

Julian fell to his knees on the cracked asphalt of the strip mall, tears finally spilling from his eyes in a torrent of pathetic, helpless misery. "She erased me... she completely erased me..."

"No, Julian," Marcus said as he turned back toward the open door of the Maybach. "You erased yourself. Elena is just cleaning up the mess."

"Wait!" Julian sobbed, reaching out toward Marcus’s polished leather shoes. "Where is Chloe?! Where did she go?! She promised she would stand by me! She told me she loved me!"

Marcus paused at the door of the limousine, looking back over his shoulder.

"Ah, Chloe," Marcus said, a cold grin touching his lips. "She’s currently on the fiftieth floor of the Sterling Crest Tower. With Elena."
