Chapter 6 - The Panic at Pine Crest

Back at 742 Evergreen Terrace, the atmosphere of festive victory had completely disintegrated into blind, unadulterated terror.

Arthur Whitaker was sitting on the living room sofa, his broken fingers bound crudely in kitchen towels and duct tape, groaning every time he shifted his weight. His face was pale, his eyes wide and bloodshot from pain and bourbon.

On the sixty-five-inch flat-screen television mounted above the fireplace, a cable news anchor was speaking over a split-screen broadcast showing a formal military portrait of Eleanor Whitaker wearing her full dress uniform, two polished stars shining brightly on each shoulder.

*"...In a late-breaking announcement from the Department of Defense, Major General Eleanor Whitaker has officially assumed supreme command of the Strategic Defense and Joint Intelligence Task Force. General Whitaker, one of the most decorated combat intelligence officers in modern military history, will oversee all domestic cybersecurity operations and counter-espionage infrastructure..."*

"Turn it off, Richard! Turn that damn thing off!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "She's a General?! You told me she was a clerk! You told me she sorted mail and typed up payroll records at the Pentagon!"

Richard was pacing across the shattered glass in the dining room, his hair disheveled, his phone pressed against his ear. Sweat poured down his forehead, soaking the collar of his expensive cashmere sweater.

"She... she lied to me, Dad!" Richard screamed, running his trembling hand through his hair. "For seven years, she never talked about her work! She drove an ordinary car! She never brought uniforms into the house! How was I supposed to know?!"

"You're an idiot!" Arthur wheezed, clutching his bruised ribs. "She broke my fingers with two hands while looking me dead in the eye! She threw a two-hundred-pound man across a table like I was a rag doll! Did that look like a payroll clerk to you?!"

"Shut up! Just shut up!" Richard yelled, dialing another number. "The phone isn't going through to Dmitri! He's not answering his secure burner line!"

"Why would he answer?!" Arthur barked, his face red with panic. "If Eleanor is who they say she is, she has the entire intelligence apparatus at her fingertips! What did we do with the girl, Richard? Where did that little brat go?!"

"Eleanor took her!" Richard stammered, his eyes darting frantically to the front windows. "Eleanor took Chloe in the truck. What if... what if Chloe told her what she saw?"

Arthur froze. Even through his haze of physical pain, the cold reality sank in.

"The papers," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling. "The Russian wire transfer codes on your laptop. Did you close the encrypted session?"

Richard’s gaze drifted slowly toward the home office situated just off the main hallway. The door was cracked open. On the mahogany desk inside, his high-end laptop was still powered on, connected to the home fiber-optic network.

"I... I left it open," Richard whispered. "I was printing the divorce documents when Eleanor walked in."

"Wipe it!" Arthur yelled, struggling to stand from the couch, his face contorted in agony. "Wipe the hard drive right now, you fool! If the military looks into your accounts because of a domestic assault complaint, they'll seize that laptop!"

Richard bolted into the office, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He lunged for the laptop, his trembling fingers hovering over the trackpad.

Suddenly, the screen went completely black.

Richard frowned, tapping the keys frantically. "What the... come on, work!"

A single line of green text appeared across the center of the dark monitor:

**ACCESS DENIED. HOST TERMINAL SEIZED UNDER SECTION 702 FISA WARRANT. ALL LOCAL DATA MIRRORED TO FORT MEADE MAIN SERVER.**

Richard stumbled backward, knocking over his leather desk chair. "No. No, no, no..."

Before he could process the horror, the power in the entire house died.

The television instantly shut off. The festive Christmas tree lights blinked out. The gas fireplace valve snapped shut with an audible click. The warm, inviting colonial was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness, save for the howling wind rattling the bay windows.

"Richard?!" Arthur screamed from the living room, his voice shrill with blind terror. "What happened to the lights?! Why is it dark?!"

Richard stepped cautiously back into the hallway, using the flashlight on his iPhone to illuminate the darkness. "The power must have failed... the blizzard..."

Then came the rumble.

It was not the sound of thunder. It was the low, rhythmic, earth-shaking vibration of multiple heavy diesel engines idling directly outside on Evergreen Terrace.

Richard moved toward the front window, peeling back the velvet curtains with shaking fingers.

What he saw made his breath catch in his throat.

The quiet, wealthy suburban street was completely blocked. Three massive, armored BearCat tactical vehicles sat parked across the lawn, their heavy tires tearing deep ruts into the pristine snow. Behind them were four black Suburbans and six state police cruisers, their emergency lights flashing silently in blinding bursts of red and blue, casting eerie, pulsating shadows against the falling snow.

Dozens of figures clad in black tactical combat armor, night-vision goggles, and carrying suppressed assault rifles were moving swiftly across the lawn, surrounding every perimeter exit with practiced military precision.

"Dad..." Richard whispered, his voice entirely drained of life.

"What is it, Richard?" Arthur called out from the dark living room. "Who's out there?"

Richard slowly dropped the curtain.

May you like

"They're here."
