Chapter 20 - The Edge of the Abyss

The six-vehicle armored convoy roared across the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge under full tactical blackout. Overhead, two AH-64 Apache gunships thrashed the night air, their 30mm chain guns tracking any potential threat along the skyline of Washington, D.C.
Sirens echoed across the city as the convoy blew through every security checkpoint, Capitol Police cruisers falling in behind us as an escort under the emergency orders of the Joint Chiefs.
We pulled onto the grand plaza in front of the Capitol steps. Hundreds of journalists, alerted by the emergency Pentagon broadcast, had swarmed the barricades, their camera flashes turning the midnight plaza into an electric sea of white light.
The rear doors of my MRAP slammed open.
I stepped down onto the marble pavement, followed by Chloe, flanked by a phalanx of twenty heavily armed Army Rangers. The flashing cameras caught the blood and dust on my uniform, the cold determination in my eyes, and the silver stars on my collar.
At the top of the marble steps stood Senator Bradley Vance—the architect of the conspiracy, flanked by six men in gray civilian suits and his private security detail. His face was ghostly pale, his hand resting inside his tailored suit coat.
"Major General Eleanor Whitaker!" Senator Vance’s voice boomed through the plaza's loudspeaker system, trembling with desperate fury. "You are marching an armed military force onto the grounds of the Congress! This is high treason! Stand down or you will be court-martialed and executed!"
I climbed the steps, each stride echoing against the stone like a death knell, Chloe walking steadfastly right beside me.
"The only treason committed here tonight is yours, Senator!" I bellowed back, my voice carrying over the roar of the news helicopters hovering overhead. I held up the digital data drive, letting it gleam under the blinding press spotlights. "Thirty terabytes of classified logs! Every bribe! Every treasonous contract! Every order you gave to leave my sixteen-year-old child to freeze to death on a mountain! It ends tonight!"
The crowd of reporters erupted into a frenzy of shouts. Senator Vance stepped back, pure terror contorting his aristocratic features.
"You think you've won, Whitaker?!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking into madness. "You think you're the only one with an army?!"
Suddenly, high above on the Capitol dome, a red laser sight pierced through the darkness, snapping directly onto the center of Chloe’s chest.
"SNIPER!" Marcus screamed, lunging forward.
Before I could throw my body over my daughter, a heavy, deafening gunshot tore through the night air. But it wasn't aimed at Chloe—it ripped straight through Senator Vance’s skull, spraying dark crimson across the white marble steps.
The plaza descended into absolute screaming pandemonium.
Through the chaos, a chilling synthesized voice crackled through every radio, every loudspeaker, and every reporter's microphone simultaneously:

*"Thank you for cleaning the board, General Whitaker. But the Vance family was merely the opening act. Look up."*
I whipped my head up toward the sky. Emerging from the low-hanging thunderclouds over the National Mall was an unmarked, massive military cargo jet—its bomb-bay doors slowly grinding open directly above the heart of the capital...
