Chapter 8 - The Hidden Safe Beneath the Wine Cellar

By 8:30 PM, the flashing lights had faded down the long private road. The mansion was silent.

A team of state forensic investigators remained in the basement under Harrison’s direct supervision, cataloging the stacks of hidden documents, encrypted hard drives, and forged corporate bonds that Everett had accumulated over decades of criminal mismanagement.

Gabriel walked down the spiral stone steps into the wine cellar.

The air was damp and chilled, smelling of aged oak barrels and damp earth. Beneath a row of vintage French bordeaux, two investigators were lifting a section of loose bluestone paving.

"Mr. Blackwood," one of the forensic specialists said, stepping aside. "You need to see this."

Gabriel stepped forward. Embedded beneath the stone was a fireproof steel lockbox. The lid had already been pried open by the state technicians.

Inside lay three items.

The first was a thick stack of letters written in Elena’s delicate hand—letters she had written to Gabriel during the final months of her life, detailing her growing suspicion that she was being followed, that her phone was being tapped, and that Marlene was slipping sedatives into her evening tea. Elena had hidden them here, knowing that if she left them in their bedroom, Marlene’s private cleaning staff would discover them.

Gabriel picked up the first letter. His hands shook as he read Elena’s final words:

*Gabriel, my love—*

*If you are reading this, it means I didn't make it to Harrison’s office. Do not blame yourself for being away. You were building a future for our family. Just promise me one thing: protect Sophie. Marlene looks at her not as a grandchild, but as a threat. Take Sophie away from this house. Burn the Blackwood name to the ground if you must. Just keep our baby safe.*

*Forever yours, Elena.*

A solitary tear escaped Gabriel’s eye, rolling down his cheek and falling onto the aged paper.

He held the letter to his chest, closing his eyes as a wave of immense, agonizing grief washed over him—grief that had been locked behind emotional armor for eighteen long months.

"Mr. Blackwood?" the investigator asked softly. "There’s something else."

Gabriel opened his eyes.

The investigator pointed to a small digital camcorder and a micro-SD card resting in the bottom of the lockbox.

"We ran the initial file recovery on this card," the investigator explained. "It contains interior security footage from the kitchen and foyer over the last three weeks. Footage that Mrs. Blackwood thought she had permanently deleted from the cloud server."

Gabriel’s jaw tightened. "What's on it?"

"Evidence of systematic abuse, sir," the investigator replied, his voice tight with professional anger. "Every time you were on a business flight, your mother subjected Sophie to verbal humiliation, forced manual labor, and physical isolation. She was deliberately breaking the child's spirit so that the Swiss facility could classify her as 'severely mentally unstable' without raising red flags during intake."

Gabriel looked at the small black chip.

"Keep it," Gabriel said. "Give it to Harrison. Make sure every single second of that video is presented to the grand jury. I want no bail. I want no plea deal. I want them to die in prison."

"Understood, sir."

Gabriel took Elena’s letters, turned on his heel, and walked out of the cold, subterranean darkness of the cellar back up into the light.
