Chapter 14 - The Sniper’s Nest

"Down! Sophie, on the floorboard, now!" Gabriel roared, throwing his body backward over the seat to shield his daughter just as a high-caliber round smashed through the SUV's reinforced windshield.

The glass spider-webbed violently with a deafening *CRACK*, but the Level-B6 ballistic polycarbonate held, absorbing the kinetic shock of a .338 Lapua slug.

Sophie shrieked, curling into a ball on the floor mats with her hands over her ears.

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He jammed the transmission into reverse, flooring the accelerator. The heavy tires spun against the wet mud, biting into gravel, and propelled the three-ton vehicle backward down the winding access road. Another round punched into the hood, severing the radiator line; steam hissed out in a boiling white cloud.

"Stay down, baby! Stay down!" Gabriel shouted, his voice steady despite the chaos. He steered with one hand, his eyes darting between the rear-view mirror and the tree line along the ridge.

The muzzle flash had come from the abandoned water tower overlooking the estate's northern boundary—three hundred yards out. Julian had anticipated him. Julian knew Gabriel would trace Elena’s whispers back to the estate.

Gabriel slammed the brakes, spinning the SUV into a narrow, overgrown maintenance ditch behind a thick wall of hemlock trees. The engine sputtered, the coolant temperature gauge pinning into the red. They were immobilized.

"Listen to me, Sophie," Gabriel unbuckled his seatbelt, kneeling beside her on the floor. He took off his heavy tactical jacket and wrapped it around her. "You remember the emergency drills we practiced at the beach? The rabbit hole?"

Sophie nodded through hot tears, her chest heaving. "Find the smallest space. Stay quiet as a mouse. Never come out until Daddy says the code word."

"What is the code word, Sophie?"

"*Buttercup.*"

"Good girl," Gabriel kissed her forehead tenderly. "There is an old root cellar beneath the floor of this ditch, twenty feet back. I am going to place you inside and lock the grate. I will draw him away. I will come back for you. I swear on Mommy’s soul, I will come back."

Gabriel opened the rear hatch, staying low. He swept the area with his eyes, lifted Sophie, and dashed through the briars to an ancient, half-buried storm shelter once used by the groundskeepers. He lifted the heavy iron grate, lowered Sophie onto a dry bed of leaves, and handed her his tactical flashlight and a bottle of water.

"Not a sound, Sophie. No matter what you hear."

"Daddy, don't let him hurt you," she sobbed softly.

"He can't hurt me, baby. He's just a man who forgot who built this family."

Gabriel slammed the iron grate shut, kicked dirt and dead leaves over the rusted bars until it was completely camouflaged, and then turned back toward the looming silhouette of the mansion.

He didn't seek cover. He drew a second magazine from his belt, slammed it into the Glock, and began walking directly toward the grand front entrance of the House of Sins.

If Julian wanted the key, he would have to come inside the slaughterhouse to claim it.
