Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Contract

Isabella stared down at the documents. There were stock certificates bearing her father’s signature, bank registries locked under offshore blind trusts, and an original copy of a last will and testament stamped with the golden seal of the Illinois Supreme Court. Her father had left everything to her—conditional only upon her claiming the inheritance before her twenty-fifth birthday.

Which was exactly two weeks away.

“If this is true,” she said, her voice shaking as she looked up into Vincent’s cold, calculating eyes, “why didn't you just bring these documents to the police? To the FBI?”

Vincent let out a short, humorless laugh that sent a shiver through her veins. “The police? Julian Whitmore owns half the district attorneys in Cook County. The FBI has three agents on Whitmore’s payroll just to ensure the federal docks in Lake Michigan remain uninspected. If you walk into a police precinct with these papers, Isabella, you will be found dead in a ditch before dawn. A tragic South Side mugging. Case closed.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning his elbows on the polished wood. “You cannot fight a hydra with legalities. You fight it with a bigger monster.”

“Meaning you,” she said bitterly.

“Meaning me,” Vincent agreed without a shred of modesty. “The Whitmore family wants you dead because you are the only legal block preventing them from selling the entire shipping fleet to the Russian cartel. They have already dispatched search teams to your mother’s hospice center.”

Isabella froze, the blood draining instantly from her face. “My mother—”

“Is safe,” Vincent said immediately, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet authority. “My men relocated her thirty minutes ago. She is currently in a private medical suite on the top floor of Northwestern Memorial, registered under an alias, guarded by former Navy SEALs who answer exclusively to me.”

Relief hit Isabella so violently her knees buckled; she caught herself on the edge of the table. She looked at this terrifying, magnificent man who moved human lives across the board like chess pieces.

“What do you want, Vincent?” she demanded, dropping all honorifics. “Men like you don't save people out of charity. What is your price?”

Vincent reached into his inner pocket and produced a second document—freshly printed, single-paged, with an empty signature line at the bottom.

“An engagement,” Vincent said flatly.

Isabella blinked. “What?”

“A marriage contract, Isabella. Julian Whitmore is arrogant, but he is superstitious about the old syndicate laws. According to the foundational bylaws of the Chicago Council, the Whitmore and Castile assets cannot be merged without the unanimous consent of the allied families—or through marriage to a recognized syndicate patriarch. If you marry me, my family’s ironclad protections extend to you automatically. The Whitmores will not be able to touch you without declaring open war on every port from here to New York.”

“And what do you get?” she challenged, her chest heaving.

Vincent’s gaze darkened, the gray in his eyes turning to burning steel. “Vengeance. Julian Whitmore ordered the execution of my father while I watched. I want his empire broken into dust. I want his son ruined. I want the Whitmore name erased from this city. You give me the legal authority to seize their assets; I give you your life, your mother’s survival, and your birthright.”

He slid a heavy gold Montblanc pen across the table. It rested inches from her fingers.

May you like

“Sign the contract, Isabella. Become my queen, or walk out that door and let the wolves eat you.”
