Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Crown

One month later.
The Lakeshore Crown Hotel ballroom had been rented out once again. But tonight, there were no condescending sneers. There were no arrogant billionaires looking down at server girls. Tonight, the entire city of Chicago was bowing to its new sovereign.
The grand doors opened.
Isabella stepped into the illuminated ballroom. She wore an off-the-shoulder white silk bridal gown embroidered with threads of genuine platinum, trailing a ten-foot veil woven with antique lace. At her neck rested the Castile family emeralds; on her head sat a delicate, diamond-encrusted tiara that had belonged to the European royal line her father’s ancestors had fled a century ago.
Beside her, holding her hand with an iron yet reverent grip, was Vincent Rowan. His black tuxedo was immaculate, his scars hidden beneath fine Italian wool, his slate-gray eyes looking out at the gathered elite not with fury, but with the quiet, terrifying ownership of a king who had secured his realm.
Every single magnate, judge, and foreign diplomat stood at attention, bowing their heads as the pair moved toward the elevated dais at the head of the room.
Julian Whitmore was currently awaiting sentencing at ADX Florence for high treason and syndicate racketeering. Charles Whitmore had fled the country, living in exile on a stipend controlled entirely by Isabella’s legal trust. Her mother was resting comfortably in a private lakeside villa in Switzerland, receiving the finest medical care modern science could buy, her health miraculously stabilizing.
The orchestra began to play a slow, magnificent waltz.
Vincent guided Isabella to the center of the illuminated marble floor—the exact spot where, just weeks earlier, she had stood soaked in cheap wine, humiliated and helpless.
“One dance,” Isabella whispered, a dazzling, victorious smile touching her lips as he pulled her close against his chest. “That’s what you asked for the night we met.”
“I lied,” Vincent replied, his hand resting firmly on the small of her back, his eyes softening into a gaze of pure, unadulterated devotion that no other living soul had ever been permitted to see. “I didn't come for one dance, Isabella. I came to give you the city.”
“And what if I don't want the city?” she teased softly, resting her cheek against his shoulder as they spun gracefully beneath the crystal chandeliers. “What if I only want the monster who protects it?”
Vincent’s breath hitched. For a man who had survived prisons, wars, and betrayals without ever trembling, his hand tightened around hers with a fierce, possessive tenderness.

“Then the monster is yours,” Vincent whispered against her hair, his lips brushing her skin with a promise written in blood and gold. “Until the day the sky falls, Little Queen. You will never walk through the shadows alone again.”
The music swelled, lifting their silhouettes into the brilliant light, while the entirety of Chicago’s high society watched in breathless silence as the forgotten heiress and the king of the underworld claimed their throne.
