Chapter 8 - The Press Conference Ambush

The Grand Horizon Hotel was a towering monument of glass and steel in the heart of the city’s financial district. Tonight, its grand ballroom was bathed in champagne-colored light, dripping in imported orchids and crystal chandeliers.
Over five hundred of the city’s elite—senators, venture capitalists, federal judges, and socialites—chattered in low, refined tones, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon.
At the center of the room, surrounded by television cameras and high-profile journalists, stood Julian Sterling.
He was dressed in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his hair styled to perfection, his bruised jaw skillfully concealed beneath professional television makeup. Standing beside him was Eleanor Sterling, draped in a glittering diamond necklace that caught the flashbulbs with every turn of her head.
Captain Donald Harris stood near the stage perimeter with four plainclothes detectives, their eyes scanning the entrance doors.
Julian stepped up to the podium, his expression settling into a masterpiece of sorrow and dignified grief. He raised his hands, and the room fell into respectful silence. Microphones from CNN, NBC, and Bloomberg were thrust toward his chest.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, his voice breaking with theatrical emotion. "Tonight was supposed to be a night of celebration for the Sterling Children’s Foundation. But as many of you know, my family is living through a living nightmare."
A soft murmur of sympathy swept through the crowd. Eleanor dabbed at a dry eye with a lace handkerchief.
"My beloved wife, Maya," Julian continued, clutching the podium, "remains missing. She was taken from our home by an individual suffering from catastrophic mental illness—a man who has weaponized his military past to destroy our family. We have received no ransom demand. We have received no proof of life. To Marcus Vance, if you are watching this: please. Take my wealth. Take everything I own. Just let my pregnant wife come home to the doctors who can save her."
A journalist raised a hand. "Mr. Sterling, what do the police say about the hostage’s condition?"
Julian sighed, lowering his head. "We are praying. But Captain Harris has informed me that time is running out. Maya was in the final stages of a high-risk pregnancy requiring specialized—"
*CLACK-CLACK.*
The sound was sharp, metallic, and came from the hotel’s central audio-visual booth overlooking the mezzanine.
Suddenly, the soft classical music over the speakers died.
The grand crystal chandeliers flickered twice and plunged into half-power, casting long, dramatic shadows across the opulent ballroom.
"What is that?" Julian snapped, breaking character for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the technical booth. "Security, check the AV controls!"
Captain Harris reached for his radio. "Harris to team two, secure the mezzanine—"
Before Harris could finish, the four massive, sixty-foot LED screens behind the stage—which had been displaying the Sterling Foundation’s charitable logo—flickered violently.
A deep, distorted hum vibrated through the floorboards.
Then, the screens turned bright, blinding white.
The ballroom fell into dead, breathless silence.
A video began to play.
It was not a charity video.
It was the footage Marcus had retrieved from Chloe's phone. High-definition, crystal-clear audio.
The massive screens showed the sterile, concrete basement room. It showed Maya Vance, tied down to an iron cot, crying and begging for mercy while Eleanor Sterling stood over her, casually sipping tea.
The audio blasted through the ballroom’s million-dollar surround sound system, rattling the champagne glasses on the tables:
*"Don't flatter yourself, Maya. You are merely an incubator. An expensive, low-class vessel we picked up from the gutter. Julian, hit her harder."*
The collective gasp from five hundred people sounded like an intake of air before an execution.
Julian’s face turned from bronze makeup to the color of chalk. "TURN IT OFF! SHUT IT DOWN! PULL THE PLUG!"
Eleanor froze, her glass slipping through her trembling fingers, shattering on the polished parquet floor.
"Security! CUT THE POWER!" Julian screamed, completely losing his composure, lunging toward the AV cables at the side of the stage.
"Don't touch those cables, Julian."
A voice boomed through the speakers. A voice that didn't come from the video.
At the main double doors of the grand ballroom, two hundred feet away, the heavy gilded doors swung open.
Standing beneath the archway, framed by the blinding flashes of fifty press cameras, stood Master Sergeant Marcus Vance.

And beside him, sitting in a wheelchair pushed by Dr. Evelyn Harrison, dressed in a clean, elegant white dress that revealed her bruised neck and pregnant belly, was Maya Vance-Sterling.
