Chapter 2 - The Vault of Horrors

The siren of the private tactical ambulance Marcus had summoned echoed in the distance, cutting through the silence of the affluent suburban enclave.

Marcus held his sister tight against his chest, feeling the terrifying lightness of her frame. She was six months pregnant, yet she felt as frail as dry autumn leaves. Every bone in her ribcage was visible through the silk fabric. He stood up in one fluid, powerful movement, cradling her as if she were made of glass.

On the floor, Julian groaned, spitting out blood and broken ceramic dust. He leaned heavily against an overturned leather chair, his face twisted in aristocratic indignity.

"You're dead, Vance," Julian wheezed, his fingers clawing at the broken table legs. "You broke into my house. You assaulted me. I have the mayor on speed dial. The Chief of Police is on my payroll! You're going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary!"

Marcus paused at the kitchen archway. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't curse. He merely turned his head, his steel-gray eyes locking onto Julian with an intensity that sucked the air out of the room.

"Make that call, Julian," Marcus said, his tone chillingly flat. "Call every cop, every judge, every politician you own. Because when they come for me, they’re going to find this phone. And when the world sees what you’ve been doing inside this house, all your money won't buy you enough protection in general population."

Eleanor Sterling stepped forward, her face taut with cosmetic surgery and unadulterated venom. "You think you can threaten us? You're a penniless dog! Your sister was a charity case! She signed the prenuptial agreement, she signed the medical consent waivers—"

"Mother, shut up!" Chloe shrieked from the corner, clutching her knees, her eyes fixed on the cracked smartphone Marcus held in his right hand. "He has the phone! Mom, he has *everything*!"

Marcus didn't wait for another word. He kicked open the rear kitchen exit, stepped out into the damp, pre-dawn air, and sprinted down the winding flagstone path toward the iron perimeter gates.

A matte-black armored SUV, driven by Frank "Grizzly" Torres—Marcus’s former squad mate from the 2nd Raider Battalion—screeched to a halt at the curb. The heavy rear door swung open.

"Get her in! Now!" Torres barked, jumping out with an assault medic kit strapped to his chest.

Marcus slid Maya onto the reinforced stretcher inside the modified SUV. Torres immediately went to work, his gloved hands moving with battlefield efficiency. He clamped an oxygen mask over Maya’s mouth, wrapped a blood pressure cuff around her arm, and placed an ultrasound sensor against her abdomen.

*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

The rapid, rhythmic heartbeat of the unborn child filled the back of the SUV.

Marcus closed his eyes for a single second, dropping his head against the stretcher rail, whispering a prayer of thanks to a God he hadn't spoken to since Afghanistan. Maya was alive. The baby was alive.

"Pressure is 85 over 50, she's severely dehydrated, multiple contusions across the lower back and extremities, but no placental abruption yet," Torres reported rapidly, glancing back at Marcus. "We need to get her to Doc Harrison’s private clinic off the grid before Sterling’s pet cops flag the city hospitals."

"Drive," Marcus ordered.

The SUV peeled away from the curb, its tires smoking against the asphalt, leaving the opulent, rotten fortress of the Sterling family behind.

Inside the back of the vehicle, Marcus sat beside Maya, his hand holding her cold fingers while his thumb scrolled through Chloe Sterling’s unlocked phone. What he had seen in the kitchen was only the tip of an iceberg so monstrous, so depraved, that his knuckles turned white around the glass screen.

The folder *Phase 2: Sub-Level Quarantine* contained over seventy video files spanning the last four months.

Marcus tapped the earliest file, dated ninety days ago.

The video opened with Chloe laughing behind the camera. The setting was not a bedroom, but the concrete basement beneath the Sterling carriage house—an old wine cellar converted into a makeshift medical ward. In the center of the frame, Maya was strapped to a clinical gurney, her face pale, screaming through tears as a man in a pristine white lab coat injected a yellow-tinted liquid into her IV line.

*"Subject's hormonal resistance is higher than anticipated,"* the doctor’s cold voice could be heard in the audio. *"The synthetic progestin will mimic pre-eclampsia symptoms. When the time comes, an emergency induction can be justified legally."*

Julian walked into the frame, impeccably dressed in a navy Brioni suit. He looked at Maya not as a husband looks at his pregnant wife, but as a rancher looks at livestock destined for the slaughterhouse.

*"Will the child survive a twenty-eight-week extraction?"* Julian asked, completely indifferent to Maya’s muffled pleas.

*"Eighty-five percent chance with our neonatal equipment,"* the doctor replied. *"And the mother?"*

Julian had smiled then—a smile that made Marcus’s blood run cold.

*"The mother’s heart will fail due to unforeseen gestational complications during the procedure. Her signature on the life-insurance policy and the testamentary trust transfer is already executed. Once the child takes its first breath, Maya Vance ceases to exist."*

Marcus let out a shuddering breath. His tactical training had conditioned him to compartmentalize horror, but this wasn't an anonymous battlefield. This was his baby sister. The little girl who had cried when their parents died in a car wreck twelve years ago. The girl who had worked three jobs to put herself through college while he was deployed.

"Marcus..."

Maya’s voice was a frail whisper behind the oxygen mask. She reached out, her fingers trembling as she touched his arm.

Marcus leaned close, pulling the mask down slightly. "I’m here, May. I saw the video. Who is the doctor? Why are they doing this to you?"

Tears pooled in Maya’s swollen eyes, spilling down her bruised cheeks. "Julian's grandfather... old Silas Sterling... he hated Julian. He knew Julian was reckless, that he was running the firm into bankruptcy through illegal offshore funds."

"What does that have to do with you and this baby?" Marcus demanded gently.

"The trust," Maya whispered, her teeth chattering from shock. "Silas Sterling put two hundred and fifty million dollars into a sovereign trust. Julian couldn't touch a single dollar of it unless he produced a legitimate, biological heir before his thirty-fifth birthday. His birthday is in two weeks, Marcus."

Marcus’s eyes widened as the horrifying puzzle snapped together.

"He didn't want a wife," Maya sobbed. "He married me because I had no family, no powerful connections, nobody who would look for me if I disappeared. He locked me up as soon as I conceived. They forged my signature on an adoption transfer and an insurance policy. They’re going to harvest my baby, take the money, and dump my body in the river."

Marcus looked down at the phone screen, where Julian Sterling’s face was frozen mid-laugh.

May you like

"No," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm that made even Torres look in the rearview mirror. "They’re not dumping anyone. They wanted a war. I’m going to give them one."
