Chapter 6 - The Broken Sister's Confession

The rain had turned into a freezing sleet over the city by 2:00 AM.
In a luxury high-rise condominium overlooking Central Park, Chloe Sterling paced across her plush white carpet, clutching a glass of vodka with shaking hands. The apartment was pristine, filled with designer furniture and expensive contemporary art, but to Chloe, it felt like a collapsing prison.
Her personal phone had been confiscated by her mother. Julian had screamed at her for an hour before storming out with his security team. And the local news was running constant updates on the "kidnapping" of Maya Vance.
"It's fine," Chloe whispered to herself, taking a large gulp of vodka, her knuckles white. "Julian has Campbell. Campbell will handle it. He always handles it."

The lock on her private elevator foyer turned.
Chloe froze. "Julian? Is that you?"
The double doors slid open.
Stepping into the warm, scented air of the penthouse was not her brother. It was Marcus Vance. He was drenched in rain, his black tactical sweater stained with road grime, his eyes carrying the terrifying, unblinking focus of an apex predator.
Chloe shrieked, dropping her crystal glass. It shattered against the hardwood, splashing vodka across her bare feet. She scrambled backward toward the marble fireplace, grabbing an antique brass poker with both hands.
"STAY AWAY FROM ME!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking in pure terror. "I’ll call building security! They have armed guards downstairs!"
"Your downstairs guards are having a very deep sleep in the lobby restroom," Marcus said, his voice quiet, almost conversational, as he closed the doors behind him and locked them.
He didn't rush her. He didn't raise a weapon. He simply walked into the living room, pulling a chair from the dining table, turning it around, and sitting down. He rested his forearms on the backrest, looking at Chloe as if she were a bug under a microscope.
"Put the poker down, Chloe," Marcus said calmly. "You know you're not going to use it."
Chloe’s chest heaved. Tears of sheer panic streamed through her heavy mascara. Her hands shook so violently the heavy brass rod clinked against the fireplace hearth. Slowly, humiliatingly, she let the poker drop to the carpet. She sank to her knees, sobbing into her hands.
"Please... don't hurt me," she begged, cowering against the mantle. "I didn't hit her! It was Julian! It was all Julian and Mom! I just... I just held the phone!"
"You held the phone," Marcus repeated, his tone devoid of warmth. "You laughed while my pregnant sister was beaten with a wooden cane. You laughed while she begged for her baby’s life."
"Julian made me!" Chloe wept, desperate to shift the blame, her shallow world crumbling around her. "You don't know what he's like! He controls all my trust accounts! If I don't do what he wants, he cuts me off! He threatens to put me in an institution! Mom and Julian... they're monsters, Marcus! They’ve been planning this since the day Maya found out she was pregnant!"
Marcus reached into his pocket and placed Chloe’s cracked smartphone on the low coffee table between them.
"If you want to save yourself from twenty years in a federal prison for conspiracy to commit murder, Chloe, you're going to talk. Right now."
Chloe looked up, her eyes wide with desperate hope. "If I help you... will you keep me out of jail?"
"The DA will decide that," Marcus said coldly. "But if you lie to me, or if you hold back one single detail, I won't need to put you in jail. I’ll simply leave this apartment, release the video of you laughing at Maya’s torture to every social media platform on earth, and let the internet tear your life apart. You will never walk into a restaurant, an airport, or an office again without being spat on."
Chloe shuddered, the reality of public disgrace hitting her harder than any physical blow.
"What do you want?" she whimpered.
"The medical records," Marcus demanded. "The forged signatures. Dr. Robert Sterling’s clinic files. Julian didn't keep them on this phone. Where are the hard drives?"
Chloe swallowed hard, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her silk robe.
"They’re... they’re not here," Chloe whispered. "They’re in the subterranean safe inside the estate. Beneath the carriage house wine cellar. Behind the concrete wall where Maya was kept."
Marcus leaned forward. "How do you open it?"
"It requires Julian’s biometric palm print," Chloe stammered. "Or... or the master override thumb drive that Julian keeps in his personal safe at the Grand Horizon Hotel suite. He’s staying there tonight before the gala tomorrow."
Marcus stared at her for five long seconds, measuring the truth in her eyes. He stood up smoothly, picking up the cracked phone.
"You're coming with me, Chloe."
"What? No! Julian will kill me!"
May you like
"Julian is about to have much bigger problems," Marcus said, grabbing her arm with an unbreakable grip and pulling her to her feet. "You're going to be the guest of honor at his party tomorrow."
