Chapter 9 - The Lion at the Gates

The grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton was packed to capacity.
Over two hundred journalists, financial analysts, and television cameras were crowded into the room. Victoria Vance had called an emergency press conference, ostensibly to address the "tragic scandal regarding the Vance family legacy."
Victoria stood behind the mahogany podium, looking radiant, composed, and tragic. She wore a black designer dress, playing the role of the heartbroken matriarch to perfection.
"Members of the press," Victoria spoke into the microphones, her voice laden with rehearsed sorrow. "It is with a heavy heart that I address the rumors circulating this afternoon. Five years ago, my son Julian suffered a profound heartbreak when his former wife abandoned their marriage. We have recently discovered that she has been using children—whose paternity remains highly questionable—to extort this family for hundreds of millions of dollars..."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.
BANG!
The echo cut through Victoria's sentence like a gunshot.
Every camera in the room whipped around.
Julian Vance walked down the center aisle. He was dressed in a sharp, dark charcoal suit, his presence commanding, terrifying, and majestic. Flanking him were four senior partners from the city’s most prestigious litigation firm, and Arthur Hughes, who carried a stack of certified legal binders.
Behind them, escorted by private security, walked Clara. She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress Julian had secured for her, her head held high, looking every bit the queen she had always been.
Victoria’s voice died in her throat. Her knuckles turned white against the podium. "Julian... what is the meaning of this disruption?"
Julian didn't answer until he reached the stage. He didn't ask for permission; he stepped directly up to the podium, towering over his mother. The sheer, radiating fury in his gaze made the elderly woman take a step backward.
Julian adjusted the microphone. His voice echoed through the speakers, deep, resonant, and calm.
"My mother is mistaken," Julian announced to the sea of flashing cameras.
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps.
"Five years ago, a deliberate, criminal conspiracy was executed within my family," Julian continued, his gaze sweeping across the room. "Not by Clara Bennett, but by Victoria Vance."
Victoria’s face drained of every drop of blood. "Julian! Silence yourself this instant!"
"Arthur," Julian commanded calmly.
Arthur Hughes stepped forward, distributing thick dossiers to the front-row reporters.
"In your hands," Julian said, his voice cutting through the hall like a razor, "you will find certified forensic audit reports proving that Victoria Vance systematically intercepted and destroyed correspondence sent by my lawful wife. You will find proof of forged legal documents bearing my name, used to terrorize a pregnant mother into hiding. And you will find the certified DNA results, conducted this morning by Cook County Forensics, proving that Leo and Noah Vance are my legitimate, biological sons."
Reporters frantically flipped through the binders. Shouts and camera shutters erupted like machine-gun fire.
"Mr. Vance! Are you pressing criminal charges against your own mother?!" a reporter yelled.
Julian turned to look at Victoria. The arrogant, untouchable matriarch was trembling, clutching the edges of her dress, her eyes wide with the realization that her empire, her social standing, and her life’s work were disintegrating on live international television.
"Effective one hour ago," Julian said, his eyes never leaving hers, "the Board of Directors of Vance Global voted unanimously to strip Victoria Vance of all executive titles, board seats, and trust benefits. Furthermore, all evidence of mail fraud, extortion, and forgery has been turned over to the United States Attorney’s Office."
Victoria let out a strangled, pathetic gasp, collapsing back into a chair as security stepped forward to escort her away from the stage.
Julian turned back to the crowd. He stepped away from the podium and walked down the stage steps, directly toward Clara.
In front of millions of viewers across the globe, the most powerful man in Chicago offered his hand to the woman who had scrubbed floors to protect his bloodline.
Clara took his hand. Her grip was firm, her eyes shining with tears of vindication.

"This is Clara Vance," Julian declared to the world, lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles. "My wife. And the only woman who will ever rule this family."
