Chapter 4 - Shadows in the South Side

The tenement apartment on 18th Street in Pilsen was dark, smelling faintly of old wood, radiator steam, and damp laundry.
Clara Bennett was on her knees, desperately shoving clothes into a frayed duffel bag.
"Mama, where are we going?"
Noah, the quieter twin, stood in the doorway of the tiny bedroom, clutching a one-eared stuffed bear that Clara had sewn back together three times. Beside him, Leo stood with his small fists clenched, his jaw set in a stubborn line that was an exact, painful replica of Julian's.
"Just on an adventure, my sweet boy," Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she wiped sweat from her forehead. "Just... a little trip. We’re going to take the train."
Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Julian had found them.
The moment his hand had touched her coat in the bakery, the nightmare of the past five years had come roaring back with the force of an avalanche. She remembered the cold, clinical eyes of the Vance lawyers who had cornered her in her dingy apartment when she was eight months pregnant.
*“Mr. Vance has no interest in these children. If you persist in this charade, Mr. Vance will ensure you are deemed an unfit mother. You will lose them the moment they draw breath.”*
She had spent five years living in the shadows, taking odd jobs, scrubbing floors, working double shifts at diners, living on day-old bread just so Leo and Noah could have milk and warm winter coats. She had given up her art, her pride, her youth—all to keep her boys safe from the cold, ruthless machinery of the Vance family.
And now, Julian had tracked them down.
*Why?* she thought hysterically. *Why now? He has everything. He owns half the city. Why come back to take the only things I have left in this world?*
Suddenly, the floorboards in the hallway creaked.
Clara froze. The air left her lungs.
A heavy, deliberate footstep sounded outside the battered wooden door of Apartment 4B. Then, two firm, polite knocks.
*KNOCK. KNOCK.*
Clara instinctively lunged forward, gathering both boys behind her back. She grabbed a heavy iron skillet from the small kitchenette counter, her hands shaking so hard the pan rattled.
"Clara."
The voice came through the thin wood. It wasn't the voice of the ruthless billionaire CEO whose face was plastered across Forbes. It was low, cracked with exhaustion, and laden with a sorrow so deep it sent a chill down her spine.
"Clara, please don't run," Julian’s voice plead softly. "The stairs are icy, and it’s freezing outside. Just... please let me speak to you. I swear on my life, no one is here to hurt you."
"Get away from us!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as tears blurred her vision. "Julian, I swear to God, I will call the police! Leave us alone! You have no rights to them!"
A heavy sigh echoed through the door, followed by the sound of Julian’s forehead resting gently against the wood.
May you like
"The police won't help you, Clara," Julian whispered through the door, "because I’m not here to take them. I’m here because I just found out my mother stole five years of my life. And I’m not leaving until you see what she did to us."
