Chapter 8 - The Viper Strikes Back

"We have to move. Now."

Julian hung up the phone, his voice snapping with military authority. The warmth of the father was instantly replaced by the terrifying efficiency of a billionaire under siege.

Clara stood up, panic instantly flooding her eyes. "What happened? Who was that?"

"My mother," Julian said coldly, already grabbing the duffel bag Clara had packed. "She’s cornered, and like any dying viper, she’s striking out blindly. She’s trying to weaponize child protective services and the press to seize custody of the boys and paint you as an extortionist."

Clara gasped, dropping to her knees and pulling the twins toward her. "No! I told you! I knew this would happen! She’s going to take them—"

"Clara, look at me!" Julian knelt beside her, his hands gripping her shoulders firmly. "I am not the broken boy she controlled five years ago. I built this empire. I control the board, I control the capital, and most importantly, I am their father. She will not touch a single hair on their heads. Do you trust me?"

Clara looked into his eyes. There was no hesitation there. No corporate calculation. Only the ferocious, unyielding resolve of a protector.

"I... I trust you," she whispered.

"Good. Pack what cannot be replaced. We leave in two minutes."

Outside, the distant wail of sirens began to rise through the Chicago fog. Down on the street, two black unmarked sedans screeched to a halt in front of the apartment building, followed closely by a van with the logo of a local news station.

Julian peered through the blinds, his jaw clenching. "The vultures are here."

He pulled out his phone, speed-dialing his head of private security. "Briggs. Bring the armored Suburbans to the alley behind the building. Clear the stairwell. Anyone with a camera or a state badge who steps within ten feet of my family gets detained. Do you understand?"

*"Understood, Mr. Vance. Team is in position in thirty seconds."*

Julian turned to the boys. He knelt down, smiling warmly to hide the danger. "Noah, Leo. We’re going on a secret mission. We have to be as quiet as ninjas. Can you do that for me?"

Leo’s blue eyes went wide. He nodded vigorously, clamping his hand over Noah’s mouth, who giggled behind his fingers.

Julian scooped both boys into his arms, while Clara grabbed her purse and the battered photo album of their early days.

They moved into the dimly lit back stairwell just as the heavy front doors of the building burst open downstairs, accompanied by the chaotic shouting of reporters and the authoritative bark of municipal investigators.

"Clara Bennett! This is the Department of Children and Family Services! Open up!"

Clara flinched, but Julian’s hand gripped her waist, guiding her down the concrete steps with steady, unwavering speed.

They reached the alley door. Briggs, Julian’s towering head of security, threw the iron door open, an umbrella already deployed against the biting Chicago sleet.

"Vehicle is secure, sir!"

Reporters rounding the corner spotted them. Flashes exploded in the grey afternoon light.

"Mr. Vance! Are those your children?!"

"Mr. Vance, is it true your ex-wife concealed the heirs to Vance Global?!"

"Stand back!" Briggs bellowed, his men forming an impenetrable human wall between the cameras and the family.

Julian shielded Clara and the boys with his broad frame, ushering them into the bulletproof sanctuary of the black Suburban. The heavy doors slammed shut with a vault-like thud, instantly drowning out the chaotic roar of the outside world.

As the SUV peeled away from the curb, Julian turned to Clara. She was trembling, holding the boys tightly against her chest.

Julian pulled her into his side, wrapping his long arm around her shoulders. For the first time in five years, Clara didn't pull away. She buried her face into his neck, letting out a ragged breath as the vehicle sped toward the heart of the city.

"Where are we going?" she asked quietly.

Julian’s eyes burned with cold, lethal vengeance.

"To finish this," Julian replied. "Once and for all."
