Chapter 7 - The Wolf at the Gates

The rain battered against the windshield of the lead Escalade as the convoy turned onto Decatur Street.
What had once been a vibrant corridor of historic bakeries, jazz clubs, and family-owned markets had been mutilated over the years. In place of the Vance Bakery now sat a sprawling, grim expanse of cracked asphalt, surrounded by an eight-foot chain-link fence topped with concertina wire. A faded sign hung on the gate: *CRESCENT LOGISTICS – PRIVATE PROPERTY – TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT.*
Inside the lot, parked under high industrial halogen lamps, were four dark pickup trucks. A dozen armed men wearing heavy rain jackets paced around a makeshift construction trailer, assault rifles slung across their chests.
In the passenger seat of the lead truck sat Vincenzo Ramos—"The Gravedigger." A hulking brute with dead gray eyes, a broken nose, and a jagged scar tearing across his neck. He was chewing on an unlit cigar, his phone pressed to his ear.
"I’m telling you, Carlo, something is wrong," Vincenzo growled into the receiver. "Victoria’s phone went dead two hours ago. My guys saw a tactical convoy leave Dante’s estate ten minutes ago. If Dante found out—"
*CRASH!*
The heavy iron gate of the compound was torn completely from its hinges as Dante’s lead armored Escalade smashed through it at forty miles per hour, sending metal posts and barbed wire flying into the rainy night.
"AMBUSH!" Vincenzo roared, dropping his phone and grabbing a modified drum-fed shotgun from the floorboard. "KILL THEM ALL!"
The compound erupted into absolute chaos.
Halogen lights were instantly shattered by precision sniper fire from Dante's marksmen. Muzzle flashes lit up the pouring rain like strobe lights. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire tore through the night, echoing off the steel shipping containers stacked along the nearby riverbank.
Inside the third Escalade, Luca pushed Isabella down toward the floorboards. "Stay low! Keep your head down!"
"Dante!" Isabella cried out, watching through the reinforced glass as Dante stepped out of the vehicle into the storm of bullets, a matte-black submachine gun raised to his shoulder.
He moved with the cold, calculated precision of an apex predator. Every burst from his weapon dropped a mercenary into the flooded mud. While Carlo’s men fired wildly into the darkness, Dante’s inner circle advanced in an unbroken tactical line, sweeping through the compound with devastating efficiency.
Vincenzo kicked open the truck door, firing his shotgun repeatedly toward Dante. Pellets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced body of the Escalade.
"Dante Moretti!" Vincenzo screamed above the roar of the rain and gunfire. "You think you can come into your uncle's territory and dictate terms? You're a dead man!"
Dante dropped his empty submachine gun, drew his twin customized Colt .45s from beneath his coat, and walked directly toward Vincenzo through the open crossfire, unyielding and fearless.
*BANG! BANG!*
Two heavy rounds caught Vincenzo in the right shoulder and left knee. The massive hitman collapsed to the asphalt with a howl of agony, his shotgun splashing into a deep puddle of muddy water.
Within three minutes, the remaining mercenaries were either dead or disarmed, forced onto their knees with hands zip-tied behind their backs. The gunfire died down, replaced only by the steady drumming of torrential rain and the groans of the wounded.
Dante walked up to the groaning Gravedigger, placing the polished leather sole of his boot directly onto Vincenzo's shattered knee.
Vincenzo screamed in agony, thrashing against the wet ground. "Fuck you, Dante! Carlo will skin you alive for this!"
Dante pressed down harder, his face an emotionless mask carved of granite. "Four years ago, you locked an innocent baker inside his own shop and set the thermite charges. Do you remember Marcus Vance, Vincenzo?"
Vincenzo’s eyes widened through the rain, blood bubbling on his cracked lips. "He... he was just a baker..."
"He was my family," Dante whispered.
*BANG.*

Dante fired a single round into the asphalt half an inch from Vincenzo's ear, the muzzle blast scorching the killer's skin. "And you are going to tell me exactly where the concrete is thinnest over the basement foundation, or the next round goes between your teeth."
