Chapter 6 - A Recipe Written in Blood

The midnight rain began to fall in heavy, violent sheets across New Orleans, turning the ancient streets of the French Quarter into slick mirrors reflecting neon signs and flickering streetlamps.

Outside the Moretti estate, a convoy of five blacked-out Cadillac Escalades sat idling, their exhaust plumes vanishing into the humid deluge. Twenty heavily armed soldiers dressed in tactical gear stood in the private motor pool, loading magazines into suppressed submachine guns.

Dante walked back into Isabella’s suite.

She was sitting on the edge of the large four-poster bed, wearing a dark sweater and trousers one of the maids had provided. She looked up as Dante entered, her face pale but composed.

"We are going to Decatur Street," Dante said directly.

Isabella stood up immediately. "Decatur Street? There's nothing there, Mr. Moretti. It’s just an asphalt parking lot for the dockworkers. They poured concrete over my father’s life."

"Not over everything," Dante said softly, stepping closer. "Your father was smarter than the monsters who attacked him. Victoria confessed. The ledger he died trying to save—the one containing the evidence against my uncle and the corrupt officials who authorized the destruction of your family—is still down there. Inside the old cast-iron dough retarder beneath the foundation."

Isabella gasped, her hazel eyes widening. "The vault oven! My great-grandfather bought it from a decommissioned naval ship in 1945! My father always said you could drop an artillery shell on that steel and it wouldn't even dent!"

"Precisely," Dante said. "And we are going to dig it up tonight."

"I'm coming with you," Isabella stated. It wasn't a question. It wasn't a plea. It was an absolute demand delivered with the fiery stubbornness of Marcus Vance's daughter.

Luca, standing in the doorway, frowned. "Boss, with all respect, Port 4 is hot. Carlo’s men are crawling all over the sector. If gunfire breaks out—"

"She comes," Dante cut Luca off without turning his head. "This was her father’s legacy. She deserves to see it reclaimed from the dirt."

Dante reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it and held it out toward Isabella.

Inside lay the bronze fleur-de-lis pendant, its surface cleaned and polished, gleaming softly in the warm lamplight.

Isabella choked back a sob, reaching out with trembling fingers to touch the cool metal. "My mother's necklace..."

"I took it back from Victoria," Dante said gently, his fingers brushing against Isabella's as he handed it to her. "Put it on. It belongs to the rightful heir of Marcus Vance."

With shaking hands, Isabella fastened the necklace around her throat. The cold bronze against her collarbone felt like an anchor—a tether connecting her past, her grief, and the justice that was about to unfold.

"Thank you, Dante," she whispered, using his first name for the first time.

Dante’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, an unprecedented warmth breaking through his lethal aura. "Don't thank me yet, little girl. Tonight, we take back what belongs to you. And then, we bury the men who took it."

Ten minutes later, the convoy rolled out of the estate gates, cutting through the flooded avenues toward the industrial edge of the French Quarter. The city slept, oblivious to the fact that two factions of the deadliest criminal empire in the South were hurtling toward an apocalyptic collision.
