Chapter 26 - The Sister's Reckoning

The roar of the Atlantic inside the sea cave was deafening. Black, frothing water surged through the cavern, smashing against the jagged barnacle-encrusted rocks. Lena carefully lowered Oliver into the reinforced Zodiac boat, securing his life jacket before strapping baby Grace into the center waterproof harness.

Daniel leaned heavily against the console, his fingers bloody as he hotwired the high-output marine engine. Above them, through the vertical stone shaft, the rattle of automatic gunfire began—Rachel had opened fire.

"She’s engaging them," Daniel grunted, the pain in his shoulder making him wince violently. "Lena, the gate isn't moving! The winch!"

Lena looked up into the dark shaft. Through the iron grating fifty feet above, muzzle flashes illuminated the circular walls like strobes in hell. She could hear the distinctive crack of Rachel’s Glock answering the heavier thud of military carbines.

Suddenly, a loud, mechanical clanking echoed through the cave. The rusted iron sea gate—a massive portcullis blocking the cave mouth from the open ocean—began to slowly, agonizingly grind upward. Rachel had engaged the manual winch.

Above, Rachel’s voice screamed over the din: *"Go, Lena! Don't look back! GO!"*

A terrifying scream of metal followed—a concussion grenade detonating on the upper platform. The mechanical grinding of the winch stopped. The heavy iron gate shuddered and began to slide back down under its own immense weight.

"The gate is falling!" Daniel shouted over the engine's sudden roar.

"Floor it!" Lena screamed, throwing herself across the bow.

Daniel slammed the dual throttles forward. The Zodiac leaped out of the water like a missile, the twin outboards screaming as they surged toward the closing gap. The bottom of the iron gate skimmed the top of the windshield with an ear-splitting shriek of sheared metal, showering them with rusted sparks, before the boat punched through into the roaring darkness of the open ocean.

Behind them, high on the cliff, the top of the lighthouse erupted into a blinding fireball.

"RACHEL!" Lena’s scream was torn from her throat by the gale-force wind, her fingers digging into the rubber pontoon as she watched the lantern room collapse in a cascade of burning timber and shattered glass into the sea.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, mixing with the freezing salt spray. She wanted to turn the boat around, wanted to scale the burning cliff with her bare hands, but Oliver was clinging to her waist, his small voice screaming in terror against the roar of the waves. Grace began to cry, the sharp sound cutting through the chaos.

"Lena! Look ahead!" Daniel roared, fighting the helm as twenty-foot swells lifted the Zodiac into the freezing air before crashing it down into the troughs.

Lena wiped the saltwater from her eyes.

Through the curtains of torrential rain, anchored two miles offshore in deep water, sat a vessel that looked like a floating fortress. It was a three-hundred-foot luxury megayacht, painted matte black, its decks ablaze with perimeter spotlights. Painted in sleek gold letters across the transom was its name: *The Gilded Leviathan*.

Hovering above its private helipad was an executive helicopter, its rotors spinning, preparing for immediate departure.

"That's Albright's ship," Daniel said, his voice grim and deadly. "Vivian is on that helicopter. The moment they lift off into Canadian airspace, they're untouchable."

Lena turned back toward the burning lighthouse, then looked down at Grace crying against her chest, and finally at Daniel, whose eyes burned with the fury of a man who had lost everything.

Her tears turned to ice.

"They think we're dead," Lena said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "They think Rachel was the last of us."

She reached down, pulling a heavy tactical flare gun and a spare canister of high-explosive marine distress charges from the boat's emergency locker.

"Take us under their stern," Lena ordered Daniel. "We aren't here to negotiate. We’re here to sink them."
