Chapter 16 - The Sister's Fury

While Lena and the marshals detained Vivian and her father’s legal team in the vault, Rachel had already slipped into the shadows the second the old man mentioned the farmhouse.
She drove the black sedan down the rural interstate at ninety miles an hour, tires screeching against wet asphalt. Her phone sat mounted on the dashboard, connected to the farmhouse’s hidden nursery camera. She watched the black-clad operative kick open the bedroom door on the tiny screen.
The crib was empty.
"Smart boy," Rachel gritted out through clenched teeth, slamming her foot down harder on the accelerator. "Keep moving, Oliver."
On the screen, the operative cursed, keying his shoulder radio. "The kids aren't here. Search the perimeter!"
Ten minutes later, Rachel drifted the car through the front hedge of the property, cutting the headlights. She didn't wait for backup. She drew a suppressed tactical pistol from the glove compartment, kicked her door open, and melted into the darkness of the porch.
The first intruder turned just as Rachel stepped into the hallway. Before he could raise his rifle, she drove the heel of her combat boot into his knee, sending him crashing down, and followed with a clean strike to his temple with the heavy butt of her weapon. He went limp instantly.
"Oliver!" she hissed into the stairwell. "It's Aunt Rachel! Code blue!"
From the attic ceiling crawlspace, a tiny square panel slid back. Oliver’s pale, tear-streaked face peered down, his arms wrapped tightly around a sleeping Grace.

"Aunt Rachel," he sobbed quietly. "They broke my drawing."
