Chapter 17 - The Man with the Gray Cane

Back in Manhattan, the tension inside the auction vault reached a boiling point. The federal marshals stepped forward to arrest Vivian for violation of the federal injunction, but the man with the gray cane held up a single hand.
"Wait," he said softly.
He reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch. He pressed the clasp, revealing a photograph set inside the lid. Lena gasped. It was not Vivian or a corporate crest—it was a photo of her own mother, who had disappeared twenty-five years ago.
"You think you married into this family by accident, Lena?" the old man sneered, his eyes glittering with ancient malice. "Your mother was the original architect of the Sterling Trust. She built the foundation, and then she stole twenty million dollars before vanishing into the night. Daniel didn't fall in love with you at an art gallery. He hunted you down to settle your mother's debt."
Lena felt the world tilting beneath her heels. "You're lying."
"Ask him yourself," Vivian spat, clutching her bruised arm where the marshals held her. "Why do you think Daniel never introduced you to our father? Why do you think he kept you hidden in that cheap apartment while he bought million-dollar estates? You were collateral, Lena! Just like the boy!"
Lena looked at the man with the cane. *Father.* This was Arthur Sterling—the patriarch Daniel claimed had died a decade ago.

"If I was just collateral," Lena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady calm that surprised even the marshals, "then why did Daniel give me the biometric cipher instead of you?"
