Chapter 7 - A Maid No More

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of black ties, flowing chiffon, and blinding paparazzi flashes.

The annual Vance Global Shareholders Gala was traditionally the most prestigious social event on the Manhattan calendar, an exclusive gathering where sovereign wealth fund managers, senators, and old-money dynasties mingled over vintage champagne and caviar.

Tonight, however, the atmosphere was charged with a frantic, nervous energy.

Rumors of the previous night’s altercation at the Sterling estate had spread through high-society WhatsApp groups like wildfire. Gossip columnists were whispering that Julian Vance had severed business ties with Sterling Enterprises, while financial analysts were already tracking a sudden, mysterious plunge in the value of Sterling secondary bonds.

Near the champagne fountain, Victoria Sterling stood surrounded by a small circle of socialites, desperately trying to maintain her icy, aristocratic facade. Her silver hair was coiffed to perfection, and she wore an emerald-green taffeta gown designed to project wealth and stability. Beside her, Chloe looked radiant and haughty in an off-the-shoulder gold lame dress, though the heavy application of foundation barely concealed the nervous twitching of her eye.

"It’s absolute nonsense, darling," Victoria said, laughing dismissively as she tapped the rim of her crystal flute. "A minor misunderstanding with an insubordinate domestic worker. Julian was simply under an enormous amount of stress regarding our European joint venture. We spoke this afternoon; all contracts will be finalized tonight before the keynote address."

"Is that so, Victoria?" asked Eleanor Van Der Bilt, an elderly matriarch whose family had controlled Manhattan banks for three generations. Eleanor eyed Victoria with cold, discerning skepticism. "Because my nephew at Chase Manhattan informed me that Sterling Enterprises’ credit lines were placed on indefinite administrative hold at three o’clock today."

Victoria’s hand shook so violently that champagne nearly spilled over the edge of her glass. "A temporary technical glitch, Eleanor! Nothing more than a routine compliance audit!"

"Mother," Chloe hissed under her breath, pulling Victoria aside into an alcove beneath the mezzanine. "The banks won't answer our calls! Our private jet in Teterboro was just grounded by the FAA for unpaid hangar fees! If Julian doesn't sign that three-hundred-million-dollar check tonight, we are ruined! We have to find him!"

"Pull yourself together, Chloe!" Victoria snapped, her claws digging into her daughter’s bare arm. "Julian is a businessman. He made a dramatic display last night to lower our acquisition valuation, that’s all! When he sees us surrounded by the press and our peers, he will not risk causing an international financial scandal. He will sign. He has no choice!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the top of the ballroom’s grand marble staircase swung open.

The brass fanfare of the orchestra abruptly cut out. The chatter of four hundred elite guests dissolved into absolute, suffocating silence.

Two dozen private security guards in sharp black suits stepped onto the landing, flanking the grand staircase. Then, Julian Vance stepped into view.

He looked magnificent, commanding, and utterly lethal. But it was not Julian who caused the collective breath of Manhattan’s aristocracy to catch in their throats.

On his arm, descending the marble stairs with the effortless grace of an empress, was a young woman.

Her midnight-blue gown moved like liquid velvet against her porcelain skin. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate, regal crown, framing a face of such striking, classic beauty that the paparazzi momentarily forgot to press their shutters. She walked with quiet, absolute confidence, her hazel eyes scanning the room with calm, unyielding poise.

And around her neck, blazing like a blue star against the dark velvet of her dress, was the St. Clair Star.

A collective murmur, low and terrified, rippled through the older members of the crowd.

"My God..." an elderly board member whispered, his glass tumbling from his fingers and shattering against the parquet floor. "Look at her face... look at the pendant..."

"Clara..." Eleanor Van Der Bilt gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "It’s Clara Vance! She has returned!"

Victoria Sterling’s champagne glass slipped from her hand.

CRASH.

The crystal shattered into a thousand jagged pieces at her feet, the golden wine soaking the hem of her emerald gown. Her eyes bulged from their sockets, her jaw trembling so violently that she could not form a single syllable.

Beside her, Chloe’s face turned the color of curdled milk. Her knees buckled, and she had to clutch the velvet drapery of the alcove to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

"No..." Chloe whimpered, her voice rising in a shrill, hysterical squeak that cut through the silent ballroom. "No... that’s... that’s impossible! That’s the maid! That’s the filthy little maid from last night!"

Every head in the grand ballroom snapped toward Chloe.

Julian Vance paused at the foot of the grand staircase, turning his icy, predatory gaze directly upon the terrified Sterling women. He stepped aside, allowing Lily to take the center of the room.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art acoustic system, smooth, powerful, and utterly devoid of mercy. "Allow me to introduce the guest of honor for this evening."

Lily stepped forward, her eyes locking onto Chloe and Victoria Sterling. There was no fear in her gaze. There was no hesitation.

"This is Lily Vance," Julian declared, each word falling like an executioner’s axe. "The biological daughter of Clara Vance, the true majority shareholder of Vance Global, and the sole legal owner of every asset, bond, and property currently held by the Sterling family trust."
