Chapter 3 - Bloodline of the Vanished Dynasty

The drive away from the Sterling estate was a blur of flashing city lights and heavy, deafening silence.

Lily sat in the ultra-luxurious, butter-soft leather interior of Julian’s customized Maybach, clutching his suit jacket tightly around herself. Outside the tinted bulletproof windows, the rain had begun to fall—a violent, theatrical summer downpour that drummed against the reinforced glass like a chorus of whispering ghosts.

Julian sat across from her in the facing captain’s chair, his hands resting on his knees. In the dim, ambient blue glow of the vehicle’s interior, he watched her with an intensity that made Lily’s skin prickle. He wasn't watching her like a wealthy man appraising an employee; he was looking at her features—the arch of her brow, the curve of her jaw, the specific way her upper lip curled when she was nervous.

"You have her chin," Julian said quietly, his voice cutting through the hum of the twelve-cylinder engine. "Clara had that exact same stubborn chin. Whenever our father told her she couldn't ride the horses or study corporate finance, she would lift her chin just like that."

Lily swallowed hard, her throat dry. "I... I still don't understand, Mr. Vance. My mother never spoke of family. She never spoke of wealth. We lived in a two-room house with a leaky roof in Pennsylvania. She worked twelve-hour shifts at a laundromat until her lungs gave out. If she was a billionaire’s daughter... why would she choose to live like that? Why would she let herself suffer?"

Julian’s face darkened, a shadow of profound guilt crossing his sculpted features.

"Because my family was a den of vipers, Lily," he said, the words bitter on his tongue. "Our father, Arthur Vance, was an imperialist in business and a tyrant at home. When Clara was twenty-two, she discovered that our father’s closest business partners—the Sterling family—were laundering money through illicit overseas arms trafficking. Clara went to our father to expose them. She demanded he sever all ties with Victoria’s husband."

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes burning with ancient sorrow. "Arthur Vance didn't listen. Instead, he saw Clara’s moral compass as a liability. The Sterlings threatened to ruin our family’s reputation if Clara went to the authorities. One week later, Clara found out she was pregnant. Two weeks after that, someone tampered with the brakes on her car."

Lily let out a sharp, involuntary gasp, her hand flying to her mouth.

"She survived the crash," Julian continued, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. "I was only fifteen years old at the time. I remember visiting her in the hospital. She looked at me, covered in bandages, and she whispered: *‘Julian, if I stay here, they will kill my baby before she ever draws her first breath.’* That night, Clara walked out of the hospital in the middle of a blizzard. She vanished into thin air. By morning, the Sterlings had fabricated a narrative that she had suffered a mental breakdown, jumped into the Hudson River, and drowned. They closed the case. And I spent the next twenty-one years tearing the world apart looking for her."

Tears spilled over Lily’s eyelashes, tracking through the dirt and sweat on her bruised cheeks. "She wasn't crazy," Lily sobbed, her small body shaking. "She was the kindest, gentlest mother in the world. She used to wrap her coat around me during snowstorms while she walked around in a thin sweater. She died when I was six, Mr. Vance. The state took me. I grew up in foster homes where they made me clean their floors just like Chloe Sterling did tonight."

A flash of pure, murderous rage crossed Julian’s eyes, but he suppressed it instantly, replacing it with an anchor of unwavering strength.

He reached across the space between them and gently took both of her rough, calloused hands into his.

"No one will ever make you clean a floor again, Lily," Julian declared, his voice ringing with absolute, unbreakable conviction. "No one will ever look down on you, slap you, or tell you to know your place. From this moment on, your place is at the top of the Vance empire. You are not a servant. You are Clara’s daughter. You are a Vance."

The Maybach smoothly pulled into the underground private garage of the Vance Tower—an eighty-story obsidian skyscraper that dominated the Manhattan skyline.

As the car came to a stop, the doors were opened from the outside by a team of elite private security personnel dressed in tactical suits. Dr. Robert Chen, the Vance family’s personal physician, was already waiting on the private elevator platform with a medical bag and two registered nurses.

"Julian," Dr. Chen said, stepping forward with professional urgency. "You called for an immediate emergency examination?"

"Take care of her cheek and her shoulder," Julian commanded, helping Lily step out of the vehicle. "She was assaulted at the Sterling estate. Document every contusion, every scratch, and every drop of blood. I want high-resolution forensic photographs of every injury on her body."

"Forensics?" Dr. Chen looked puzzled. "Are we pressing charges?"

Julian looked up at the soaring concrete ceiling of the private garage, a chilling, razor-thin smile touching his lips.

"Pressing charges is what ordinary people do, Robert," Julian said coldly. "We are going to obliterate them."
