Chapter 8 - Blood and Concrete

The metallic click of the revolver's hammer seemed to echo endlessly down the marble staircase. The smell of rain, ozone, and wet earth blew in from the shattered conservatory windows, filling the opulent foyer with the raw violence of the storm outside.
"Put the gun down, Victoria," Evelyn said, stepping past Julian's outstretched arm. Her voice showed no fear. She looked up at the woman holding the weapon with the absolute contempt of an empress looking at a peasant revolt. "You have completely destroyed your life. Killing us won't bring your father back. It won't erase the fact that he was a cowardly criminal who couldn't face the consequences of his own treason."
"DON'T YOU DARE SPEAK HIS NAME!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking into pure hysteria. The blood dripping down her face mixed with the rain, painting her skin in grotesque streaks. "You and Thomas Vance murdered my father! You handed him over to the feds like a dog so you could steal his share of the shipping empire! My mother went mad in a state hospital while you built this marble palace! I slept on dirty mattresses in foster homes while your spoiled little granddaughter had private tutors and trust funds!"
"Your father chose his path," Julian said, his voice trembling but firm as he stepped fully onto the bottom stair, putting his body directly in Victoria's line of fire. "My father offered to help him clean up his debts. He begged Richard to step away from the cartels. Your father chose greed, Victoria. Just like you did."
Victoria’s hand shook as she aimed the barrel directly at Julian’s forehead. "You shut up! You pathetic, weak little parasite! You think you’re noble? You let me run your entire life because you were too lazy to think for yourself! You signed every document I put in front of you! You were ready to let your mother rot in an asylum because you didn't have the stomach to look at the paperwork!"
"You're right," Julian admitted, taking one slow, deliberate step up the staircase.
Victoria’s eyes widened. "Stay back! I swear to God, Julian, I will pull this trigger! Mark, secure the bearer bonds!"
The man in the tactical jacket moved toward the study, carrying the heavy steel lockbox he had pried from the wall. But as he turned, Arthur Pendelton stepped into the light of the auxiliary tactical beam, raising a small, concealable Glock he had drawn from his briefcase.
"Drop the box," Arthur ordered calmly. "The perimeter is surrounded by fifty tactical officers. The moment that truck hit the transport van, an automatic military beacon was activated. You have approximately ninety seconds before this entire floor is swarmed by federal agents."
The man in the balaclava hesitated, looking between Arthur’s gun and Victoria. "You didn't say the house would be hot, Victoria. You said the feds would be dealing with the wreck!"
"Shoot him, you coward!" Victoria screamed, losing all control. "Shoot them all!"
The mercenary didn't shoot. Realizing the operation was completely blown, he dropped the steel lockbox with a heavy thud, shoved past Victoria, and sprinted down the secondary servant corridor toward the back fire escape, abandoning her completely.
"Mark! MARK, YOU BASTARD!" Victoria yelled, her distraction proving fatal.
In that split second of divided attention, Chloe Vance acted.
Chloe had slipped her high-heeled shoes off minutes ago. Moving silently along the outside of the spiral balustrade, she reached the halfway landing just as Victoria turned her head back toward Julian.
Chloe lunged.
With the fury of a daughter whose family had been pushed to the brink of annihilation, Chloe slammed her entire body weight into Victoria’s right arm. The revolver fired with a deafening CRACK, the bullet tearing through the crystal chandelier above, sending thousands of shards of glass raining down onto the marble floor below like a glittering avalanche.
Victoria screamed, losing her footing on the slick wooden steps. Both women tumbled down the final four stairs, crashing hard onto the lower landing.
The gun spun across the floor, skidding into the dark corner near the grandfather clock.
Victoria, driven by pure animal adrenaline, rolled over and grabbed Chloe by the throat, pinning her to the floor. "You ruined everything! You little bitch, I should have poisoned you first!"
Chloe gasped for air, her hands clawing at Victoria's wrists.
Before Victoria could squeeze, Julian descended on her. He grabbed his wife by the shoulders, ripping her off his daughter and hurling her against the wall. Victoria struck the wood paneling hard, sliding down onto the floor beside the ruined, frosting-covered cake from hours earlier.
Evelyn knelt beside Chloe, pulling her granddaughter into her arms. "Chloe! Are you hurt? Look at me, darling, are you hurt?"
"I'm okay... I'm okay, Grandma," Chloe coughed, rubbing her bruised neck, her chest heaving as she pulled herself into Evelyn's embrace.
Across the room, Victoria dragged herself up onto her elbows. She looked at Julian, who stood over her, his fists clenched, his breathing ragged. Then she looked toward the dark corner where the revolver had landed.
She began to crawl toward the weapon.
"Don't do it, Victoria," Julian whispered, his voice broken with a profound, terrifying sorrow. "Please. Just stop."
Victoria didn't stop. With a feral snarl, her fingers reached out across the marble floor, stretching for the wooden grip of the .38 caliber gun.
"Vance..." she hissed, her fingers brushing the cold steel. "I will take... every single one of you..."
Before her fingers could close around the trigger, a sharp, heavy cane came down with crushing force onto Victoria’s hand.

CRACK!
Victoria shrieked in agony as Evelyn Vance, leaning heavily on the antique silver-topped walking stick she had taken from the coat rack, pinned Victoria's wrist to the floor with absolute, unforgiving authority.
