Chapter 4 - The Venom Within

The sound that left Julian Vance's throat wasn't human. It was the strangled cry of a man realizing the woman he had slept beside for seven years had been quietly planning his execution.

"You were poisoning my drinks?" Julian dragged himself to his feet, knocking over a crystal chair in the process. "Every night... the bourbon on the rocks you brought to my study... you said it was to help me sleep! You said I was working too hard!"

Victoria didn't answer. The haughty arrogance that had defined her entire persona had evaporated, replaced by the cornered ferocity of a predator facing the barrel of a gun. She reached into her expensive designer clutch, her fingers scrambling desperately for something inside.

"Don't move!" one of the suited men at the door barked, his hand instantly disappearing inside his coat toward a concealed firearm.

Victoria froze, her hand still inside the purse.

"Take your hand out of the bag. Slowly," Arthur Pendelton commanded.

With trembling fingers, Victoria pulled her hand out. She wasn't holding a weapon. She was clutching a small, unmarked amber glass vial with a silver dropper cap.

"Digitalis," Chloe said, her voice shaking with rage. "Foxglove extract. It mimics natural cardiac arrhythmia. In small doses, it causes fatigue, dizziness, and mild cognitive decline—the exact symptoms that made my father look like he was suffering from extreme burnout, making it easy for you to take over his schedule."

Chloe walked directly up to Victoria, the daughter finally confronting the monster who had torn her family apart. "I found the second vial in your vanity three days ago, Victoria. Did you really think you were the only one who knew how to snoop? I took a sample to the forensic lab at Harvard where I work as a research assistant. We had the mass spectrometry results before you even woke up this morning."

Victoria spat at Chloe's feet. "You insolent little brat! You were always in the way! Your father was an idiot, but you... you were always watching, always taking notes like a sickening little teacher's pet!"

"Because I love my father!" Chloe screamed, tears finally breaking through her fierce exterior. "Even when he was too blind to see what you were doing to us! Even when you convinced him to send me away because you claimed I was 'disrespectful'! I knew what you were from the day you walked into this house!"

Victoria lunged.

Driven by pure, unhinged desperation, she threw herself at Chloe, her fingers curved into claws aimed at the young woman's eyes. But before she could make contact, Julian—the husband who had remained paralyzed for years—moved with a speed no one knew he possessed.

He grabbed Victoria by both wrists, twisting her away from Chloe and slamming her against the grand piano. A discordant, violent crash of piano keys rang out through the hall.

"Don't you touch my daughter!" Julian roared, his face inches from Victoria's. Spittle flew from his lips, his eyes wild with fury. "You used me! You poisoned me! You tried to destroy my mother! I gave you everything! A home, a name, access to every luxury in the world, and you wanted my life?"

"Your life?" Victoria hissed, thrashing against his grip. "You have no life, Julian! You are an empty shell! A mama's boy who couldn't make a decision without Evelyn's blessing! You disgust me! Every second I had to let you touch me made me sick to my stomach!"

"That's enough," Evelyn's voice rang out, cold and commanding.

Julian stepped back, his chest heaving, his hands trembling as he released Victoria.

Victoria slumped against the grand piano, her hair matted with cake frosting, her designer dress torn at the shoulder, looking entirely unhinged. She looked around the room at the twenty-five guests. These were the high-society elites who had courted her favor, who had attended her charity galas, who had praised her elegance. Now, they were staring at her with undisguised disgust. Several of them were filming on their own phones.

"You're all hypocrites," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking. "Every single one of you would have done the same thing if you had the guts."

"No, Victoria," Evelyn said, standing beside her broken son. "They are ambitious. They are ruthless. But they are human beings. You are simply a parasite. And your feast has come to an end."

The heavy oak doors swung open completely.

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand gravel driveway through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Four uniformed officers from the Boston Police Department, flanked by two special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, marched into the ballroom.
