Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Evelyn's hand froze against Julian's cheek. The warmth that had briefly settled into the room evaporated, replaced by a sudden, icy chill that made the hair on the back of Chloe’s neck stand up.
"What do you mean, Arthur?" Evelyn asked, slowly retracting her hand. Her voice had returned to that terrifying, low register of corporate authority. "Victoria was an orphan. Her parents died in a boating accident off the coast of Rhode Island ten years ago. Julian verified her background himself before they were married."
Julian blinked through his tears, looking up at Arthur. "I did! I hired an independent private investigator! She had a modest inheritance, a clean record, and no surviving immediate family. She told me she was entirely alone in the world!"
Arthur sighed heavily, pulling a yellowed document from the depths of the second folder. "The investigator you hired, Julian, was recommended to you by Dr. Marcus. The entire background report was a fabrication, constructed from top to bottom."
Chloe stood up, her jaw tightening. "Then who is she, Arthur? Who did my father actually marry?"
Arthur placed the document onto a clean corner of the mahogany dining table. It was a birth certificate, decades old, stamped by the state registrar of New York. Beside it was a high school photograph of a young girl with dark hair and sharp, familiar, predatory eyes.
"Her name isn't Victoria Sterling," Arthur explained. "Her real name is Victoria Cross. She is the only daughter of Richard Cross."
The name struck Evelyn like a physical blow. The seventy-year-old woman visibly recoiled, her hand gripping the back of Julian’s chair so tightly her knuckles turned paper-white.
"Richard Cross..." Evelyn whispered, the name tasting like ash in her mouth. "Richard Cross died in federal prison twenty-five years ago."
"Who is Richard Cross?" Chloe asked, looking between her grandmother and the corporate attorney. "Dad, do you know that name?"
Julian looked completely lost. "No... I’ve never heard it. Mother, who was he?"
Evelyn closed her eyes for a brief moment, the ghosts of her past rising up before her. When she opened them, the sorrow was gone, replaced by a hard, bitter clarity.
"Richard Cross was your father's first business partner," Evelyn said, her voice hollow. "Thirty-five years ago, before Vance Maritime Logistics became a global conglomerate, it was called Vance & Cross Freight. Richard was brilliant, charming, and utterly devoid of a conscience. He tried to use our cargo ships to smuggle unregistered weapons and narcotics through the Port of Boston."
Chloe gasped.
"Your father discovered it," Evelyn continued, her gaze fixed on the shattered birthday cake on the floor. "Thomas refused to be an accomplice. He went directly to the Department of Justice with twenty binders of evidence. Richard was arrested, his assets were seized by the federal government, and he was sentenced to thirty years without parole. He hanged himself in his cell six months into his sentence."
"His family was left destitute," Arthur added. "His wife suffered a complete mental breakdown, and his seven-year-old daughter was placed into the state foster care system. She disappeared from public records for fifteen years—until she resurfaced under the name Victoria Sterling, armed with an elite finishing school education paid for by unknown offshore trusts, and a singular, obsessive purpose."
Julian felt the room spinning. He clutched the armrests of his chair, struggling to breathe. "She... she didn't marry me for money. She married me for revenge."
"Both," Arthur corrected. "She wanted to bleed the Vance estate dry, leave you bankrupt and dead of an apparent medical episode, and transfer the entirety of the Vance family legacy into an account controlled by her father's surviving brother—Thomas Cross. The man who has been financing her from the shadows in London."
Evelyn turned sharply toward Arthur. "Thomas Cross is still alive?"
"Very much so," Arthur said. "And as we speak, Scotland Yard, working in coordination with Agent Miller's federal task force, is executing a search warrant on his estate in Kensington. Victoria was the weapon, Evelyn. But the hand guiding the blade was the Cross family’s unfinished vendetta."

Suddenly, Chloe’s phone buzzed with an urgent notification. She looked down at the screen, her eyes widening.
"Grandmother..." Chloe said, her voice trembling. "Agent Miller just sent a text to the family liaison line. The transport vehicle carrying Victoria away from the manor... it was just involved in a collision at the intersection of Route 9."
