Chapter 9 - The Standing Lion

The abandoned warehouse on the banks of the Chicago River smelled of rusted metal, river silt, and impending doom.

A single overhead halogen lamp swung gently from an iron chain, casting erratic shadows across the concrete floor.

Julian Vance and Victoria Moretti sat back-to-back, strapped tightly to two heavy industrial steel chairs.

Victoria’s red gown was shredded and covered in grease, her face swollen from hours of uncontrollable weeping.

Julian’s shattered knee had been crudely bandaged with a combat tourniquet, his arrogant pride completely obliterated.

They refused to look at one another, the weight of their mutual betrayal hanging between them like a toxic cloud.

The heavy metal sliding door at the far end of the warehouse rattled violently as it was pushed aside.

Elena walked in first, accompanied by Marcus, who held an envelope containing legal deeds and cash bonds.

Behind them, Dante Moretti rolled into the warehouse in his motorized chair, stopping ten feet from the prisoners.

Victoria raised her tear-streaked face, begging Dante for forgiveness in a desperate, humiliating shriek.

She cried that Julian had blackmailed her, that she was forced to push him into the pool to protect her family.

Julian spat a mouthful of blood toward her chair, calling her a lying snake who had begged him to murder her husband.

He snarled that Victoria had spent months fantasizing about spending Dante’s empire with him on a yacht in Monaco.

Dante listened to their pathetic bickering with absolute, motionless silence, his face carved out of pure stone.

He raised his right hand, and the warehouse instantly fell dead silent, the traitors holding their breath in terror.

Dante looked directly at Victoria, reminding her of the vows she had spoken in the cathedral three years ago.

She had promised to stand by him in sickness and in health, till death tore their lives apart.

He whispered that she had been so remarkably eager to bring that death forward with a single shove into the water.

Then, Dante reached down toward the footrests of his mechanical wheelchair.

He unlocked the leather straps binding his ankles, his movements calm, fluid, and completely unhurried.

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening until the whites were completely exposed.

Julian stopped breathing entirely, his mouth hanging agape in a portrait of pure, unadulterated shock.

Dante planted both of his polished leather shoes firmly flat onto the cold concrete floor.

With smooth, effortless power, the feared godfather of Chicago pushed himself upward.

He stood up tall, broad-shouldered, and completely upright on his two powerful, muscular legs.

He towered over them at six feet, three inches, the undisputed king of the underworld standing in absolute health.

He reached down, adjusting the cuffs of his black dress shirt with the cool composure of an apex predator.

He revealed that his paralysis from the ambush six months ago had only lasted for twelve short weeks.

His personal doctors had been sworn to absolute secrecy under the penalty of immediate, gruesome death.

He had faked his wheelchair confinement for three months specifically to see which rats would dance on his perceived grave.

He explained that the safety belt in the pool had indeed jammed, and Elena’s intervention had truly saved his life.

He had not planned to drown, but his enemies’ treachery had created the ultimate test of survival and loyalty.

Victoria began to sob uncontrollably, realizing that she had walked voluntarily into a trap woven by a master.

Dante stepped forward, the heavy thud of his polished boots echoing like thunderclaps through the hollow warehouse.

He leaned down between their tied heads, his voice vibrating with absolute, merciless finality.

He told them that treason in the city of Chicago carried a mandatory, non-negotiable sentence.
