Chapter 8 - The Thunder of Retribution

Before Julian Vance could snap the black ledger shut, a blinding crimson laser dot settled directly between his eyes.

Two more bright red beams danced across the heavy wool chest of his expensive trench coat.

His mocking smile vanished into thin air, his aristocratic face freezing in a sudden wave of primal terror.

He spun toward his three bodyguards, screaming at them to raise their weapons and draw their defensive perimeter.

Before the words completely left his mouth, a high-caliber sniper round tore through the engine block of the Escalade.

The massive SUV exploded in a violent shower of white steam, sparks, and ruptured hydraulic fluid.

The concussive boom shattered every remaining pane of glass in the nearby rusted train cars.

Marcus’s tactical unit materialized from the dense fog like ghosts, their assault rifles barking in controlled bursts.

Julian’s bodyguards were cut down within three chaotic seconds, their bodies collapsing heavily onto the gravel tracks.

Elena dropped flat to the muddy ground, curling into a tight protective ball with her hands over the back of her neck.

Julian dropped the ledger, drawing a chrome-plated revolver from his inner pocket with shaking, panicked hands.

He lunged forward, intending to grab Elena by the hair to use her as a human shield against the invisible snipers.

A single, devastating shot cracked through the cold night air, punching directly through Julian’s right kneecap.

The underboss shrieked in agony, his leg buckling completely as bone fragments tore through his designer slacks.

He collapsed face-first into the filthy track gravel, his chrome pistol skidding away into the dark weeds.

He rolled onto his back, clutching his shattered joint, screaming profanities into the suffocating Chicago mist.

Dozens of heavy combat boots surrounded him, the muzzle of an assault rifle pressed firmly against the bridge of his nose.

Marcus stepped into the circle of light, his expression entirely devoid of mercy or human empathy.

He kicked the chrome revolver far out of reach, then reached down and retrieved the fallen black ledger.

He pressed his radio earpiece, reporting to his master that the package was secure and the trash was ready for collection.

Elena pushed herself up from the wet dirt, her heart racing so fast she felt completely lightheaded.

Marcus extended a large, gloved hand, gently pulling the brave young woman up to her feet.

He told her with genuine respect in his gruff voice that she had done an extraordinary job under the fire of the enemy.

From the edge of the access road, a heavy armored black van rolled slowly through the broken perimeter gate.

The side pneumatic door slid open with a smooth, ominous hiss, revealing the interior cabin bathed in amber light.

Sitting inside on an elevated motorized platform was Dante Moretti, looking down at his defeated rival.

Julian coughed up blood onto his white collar, staring in absolute, disbelieving horror at the man he thought he drowned.

He stammered through the pain, asking how Dante could possibly be sitting there alive after plunging into the deep.

Dante looked down at the broken underboss, his voice cutting through the rail yard like a razor blade.

He told Julian that loyalty is a bulletproof armor, and a man who buys his soldiers will always die alone in the dirt.

He signaled his men with a subtle nod, ordering them to toss the screaming underboss into the back of the van.

The reckoning that began beside the swimming pool was about to reach its final, cinematic conclusion.
