Chapter 20 - The Abyss Beneath the Mirror

The water in the drainage tunnel was a violently spinning centrifuge of mud, cold, and velocity.

Sarah fought against the crushing hydrostatic pressure, her boots kicking furiously, one arm locked like an iron band around Mia’s torso. Mia’s face was pressed into Sarah’s neck, the little girl’s hands tangled desperately in her mother’s soaked hair.

The roar inside the pipe was total, a subterranean freight train carrying them at terrifying speed through the mountain ridge. Sarah’s lungs screamed for oxygen. Red dots bloomed behind her eyes. Just as her consciousness began to fray into gray static, the concrete tunnel abruptly ended.

They were violently expelled into the open water of Bellweather Cove.

Sarah kicked toward the pale moonlight filtering down through the surface reeds. She broke the water, gasping a ragged, burning breath of air, hauling Mia upward into the rain.

"Breathe, Mia! Breathe!" Sarah choked out.

Mia coughed violently, vomiting lake water, crying hysterically but drawing air into her tiny lungs. "Mommy! Mommy!"

"I've got you, baby. I've got you," Sarah sobbed, swimming with one arm toward the muddy bank where the dark silhouette of an abandoned boathouse loomed in the reeds.

Dragging herself and Mia through the freezing mud, Sarah collapsed against the wooden pilings beneath the boathouse deck. She was shivering uncontrollably, her body on the brink of hypothermia. The Pelican case was still miraculously clutched in her fist.

In the distance, atop the ridge, a sudden orange fireball erupted into the rainy sky. The pumping station had exploded, flames billowing upward as the fuel reserves inside detonated, lighting the lake surface in an apocalyptic red glow.

"Derek..." Sarah whispered, tears burning her cold cheeks.

Then, the wooden dock boards directly above her creaked.

Heavy, measured footsteps moved across the rotting timber of the boathouse pier. Sarah pressed Mia against the mud beneath the dock, holding her breath, her hand slipping into her coat pocket for the utility flashlight.

A figure stepped to the edge of the dock above them.

The beam of a high-powered tactical searchlight swept across the reeds, cutting through the steam rising from the water. The light froze directly on Sarah’s face.

Sarah raised the heavy steel flashlight, flicking it on, aiming the beam up at the man standing above her on the dock.

The man was tall, dressed in a custom charcoal cashmere overcoat, completely dry beneath a large black umbrella held by a silent, armed operative standing behind him. He wasn't Ruiz. He wasn't a local cop.

He slowly lowered the umbrella.

Sarah’s breath caught in her throat, her blood turning to pure ice.

The man staring down at her had the exact same piercing blue eyes, the exact same jawline, and the exact same crescent scar above his left eyebrow as Derek. But this man’s hair was silvered at the temples, his posture carrying an aura of lethal, aristocratic authority.

He looked down at Mia, who was shivering in Sarah’s arms.

Mia looked up through the flashlight beam, blinked the lake water from her eyes, and whispered in stunned recognition:

"Daddy?"

The man smiled down at them—a cold, terrifying smile that held no warmth at all.

He leaned forward slightly, resting his gloved hands on the wooden railing, and spoke in an accent clipped with European ice:

"Good evening, Sarah. Thank you for keeping my daughter safe. Now, tell me... where did my brother hide the rest of my money?"
