Chapter 14 - The Buried Ledger

The silence in the room was heavier than the deep lake water. Outside, thunder shook the house, rattling the picture frames on the walls.
"What did you just say?" Sarah rose slowly, placing her body between Derek and their daughter. Her voice was deadly, stripped of fear, replaced by the lethal instinct of a mother cornered. "Who Mia really is?"
Derek looked down at the photograph in his trembling hands, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "Four years ago, when we did the third round of IVF at Dr. Park's clinic... our embryo didn't survive the thaw, Sarah. The doctor told me while you were still sedated in recovery."
Sarah felt the room tilt violently. "You're lying. That’s impossible. We heard her heartbeat on the monitor—"
"Dr. Park panicked," Derek wept, sinking onto the arm of the sofa, his head in his hands. "Franklin Shaw owned the medical building. Shaw came into the consultation room five minutes after the embryo failed. He told us there was another child—born that exact morning to an anonymous surrogate funded by his syndicate. He offered to substitute the newborn into the incubator, register the birth under your name, and make it look like a miracle birth. But there was a price."
"A price?" Sarah screamed, the sound tearing out of her chest.
"Collateral!" Derek cried out, looking up with eyes filled with terror. "Shaw said she wasn't just any child. Her biological father was an overseas financier who had hidden thirty million dollars in encrypted bonds before he was executed by the cartel. Shaw used Mia to hold leverage over the offshore trust. But when Mia turned three, the trust activated a DNA verification protocol. Shaw told me that if I staged a drowning accident at Bellweather, a retrieval team in diving gear would take Mia, switch her with an unidentified Jane Doe infant corpse from the morgue, and wipe the slate clean!"
"And you went along with it?" Sarah whispered, horror choking her throat.
"No!" Derek shouted, grabbing his hair. "I brought you to the lake to stop it! I tried to hold you back because I saw the bubbles in the water—I knew they had sent the diver early! When you jumped in, Sarah, you broke the timeline! You pulled her up before the diver could secure the swap! That diver wasn't trying to save her—he was stealing her!"
Mia whined softly, clutching Sarah’s leg. Sarah picked her up, holding the little girl against her chest with a grip of steel.

"Locker 14," Sarah said coldly, pulling the brass key from her pocket. "What is inside Locker 14, Derek?"
"The extraction contract," Derek whispered, looking up through his tears. "And the original birth certificate with the name of the man who is coming to take her back tonight."
