Chapter 15 - The Watcher on the Ridge

They didn’t wait for dawn.

With Mia strapped into her booster seat in the back of the SUV, wrapped in blankets and clutching her yellow stuffed duck, Derek drove through the blinding torrential downpour back toward the dark contours of Bellweather Lake. Beside him, Sarah held Derek’s heavy steel utility flashlight in her lap, her eyes sweeping the pitch-black highway.

"If Shaw’s team wanted her dead, they would have attacked the house," Sarah said, her voice hyper-focused, running through every scenario with tactical precision. "They want her alive. They need her biometric verification for that trust."

"That's why the lockbox exists," Derek replied, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. "The pumping station has an old emergency fallout shelter beneath the water intake tower. Shaw stored physical backups of all his syndicate leverage files there in steel military footlockers. Locker 14 contains the sealed digital drive with Mia’s real lineage and the override keys to the trust. If we secure that drive, we hold the only leverage they care about."

The SUV turned off the paved road onto the overgrown gravel path that wound up the western ridge overlooking Bellweather Lake. The water below was invisible in the storm, a vast, pitch-black void swallowing the lightning flashes.

At the end of the road stood the condemned brick silhouette of the 1950s pumping station. Its rusted iron gates hung loosely from cracked concrete pillars, groaning in the gale-force wind.

Derek killed the headlights fifty yards away. They stepped out into the biting cold, the mud pulling at their boots. Sarah carried Mia wrapped tightly in a waterproof coat, shielding the child’s face from the driving rain.

Derek raised his flashlight, illuminating the shattered wooden door of the main pump house. He held out his hand for the brass key.

Suddenly, a tiny crimson laser dot drifted across Derek's chest.

"Derek, down!" Sarah shrieked, throwing herself into the mud beside the SUV.

*Crack!*

The sharp crack of a suppressed rifle echoed against the concrete walls. The side window of their SUV exploded in a shower of crystallized safety glass, the bullet punching through the headrest where Derek’s head had rested seconds prior.
