Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Carriage 5

Six months later.
The Chicago skyline glittered like a mountain of diamonds against the ink-black expanse of Lake Michigan. On the seventy-fifth floor of the Sterling International Tower, the annual summer gala of the American Logistics and Infrastructure Council was in full swing.
Four hundred of the nation’s most powerful senators, foreign dignitaries, and Fortune 50 CEOs mingled across marble floors, holding crystal champagne flutes under cascading crystal chandeliers.
Near the center of the grand ballroom, Julian Sterling stood surrounded by a circle of banking executives and government liaisons. He was dressed in a pristine bespoke tuxedo, his posture commanding, commanding the room with effortless authority.
"Mr. Sterling," an elderly senator from Virginia remarked, sipping his champagne. "We heard rumors that the Bitterroot corridor acquisition faced severe resistance from local cartels earlier this year. How did you manage to resolve the situation so swiftly?"
Julian took a slow sip of his sparkling water, a faint, knowing smirk touching his lips. "Let’s just say we found a local partner who had significantly better leverage than our competitors."
"And Arthur Vance?" a foreign investor inquired. "We read the Department of Justice finalized his sentence yesterday."
"Twenty-eight years at ADX Florence without parole," Julian stated flatly. "And Hank Miller received fifteen years for conspiracy to commit murder. Both will spend the rest of their natural lives in concrete cells."
Before the senator could ask another question, the double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase opened.
The orchestra subtly shifted its melody, and a sudden, reverent hush fell across the crowded ballroom.
Julian looked toward the stairs.
Emma Miller stood at the landing.
She wore a breathtaking, custom-designed emerald-green silk backless gown that complemented her porcelain skin and vibrant auburn hair, styled in soft, cascading Hollywood waves. Around her throat rested a simple, elegant platinum pendant featuring an uncut emerald from the Bitterroot Range. She looked regal, radiant, and utterly untouchable.
Beside her, completely healthy and beaming with pride, walked Clara Miller, looking magnificent in an elegant midnight-blue dress.
The whispers began instantly across the room:
*"Is that her?"*
*"The sovereign owner of the Bitterroot Pass?"*
*"Julian Sterling’s fiancée..."*
Emma caught Julian’s gaze from across the vast room. She smiled—that same brave, luminous smile that had illuminated the darkness of Carriage 5 when all hope seemed lost.
Julian stepped away from the circle of billionaires without offering a single word of apology. He crossed the ballroom, his eyes locked entirely on her, parting the crowd of elites like the sea before a storm.
He reached the base of the marble staircase just as Emma descended the final step.
He offered her his arm, bowing slightly. "You are thirty minutes late, Miss Miller."
"A lady takes her time, Mr. Sterling," Emma replied with a teasing smirk, sliding her gloved hand securely into the crook of his elbow. "Besides, I had to make sure my mother’s penthouse suite had the exact lavender flowers she liked."
"Whatever she wants, she gets," Julian murmured, looking down at her with an adoration so profound that several nearby society photographers lowered their cameras, reluctant to disturb the moment. "You look magnificent, Emma."
"Not bad yourself," Emma murmured, leaning slightly closer. "Considering six months ago you were bleeding all over my grandmother's scarf."
Julian leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear in a whisper that sent shivers straight to her toes.

"Come with me," he said. "I have something to show you."
