Chapter 7 - The Sovereign of Bitterroot

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had passed.
The sky over Montana was an endless, crystalline vault of deep azure. The morning sun reflected off the fresh blanket of snow covering Bitterroot Valley, turning the mountain peaks into glittering towers of diamond dust.
Clara Miller sat in a wheelchair on the sunlit veranda of the hospital’s private rehabilitation garden, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. Her cheeks were pink with returning vitality, and her eyes, once clouded by the fog of poison, were clear, bright, and filled with tears of joy.
"He did all of this for us, sweetheart?" Clara asked, holding Emma’s hand tightly.
"He did, Mom," Emma smiled, leaning her head on her mother's shoulder. "Hank is never coming back. Vance is facing thirty years in federal penitentiary. We're safe."
Footsteps crunched against the shoveled flagstones behind them.
Emma turned.
Julian Sterling approached, wearing a tailored navy wool coat and dark trousers. He walked with total ease now, his strength fully returned. Behind him, Marcus carried a sleek leather portfolio.
Clara looked up at the towering billionaire, her eyes brimming with maternal emotion. "Mr. Sterling... Julian. There are no words in the English language to thank you for what you've done. You gave me my life back. You saved my daughter from a fate worse than death."
Julian stopped, bowing his head with deep, respectful deference. "Mrs. Miller, you raised a daughter with the courage to confront death on a freezing train to save a complete stranger. If anyone in this valley deserves honor, it is you."
Julian gestured to Marcus, who stepped forward and presented the leather portfolio to Clara and Emma.
Emma opened it. Inside were two legal documents.
The first was the deed to the Miller Ranch. Hank’s name had been completely excised from the land registry through an emergency probate court order, leaving Clara and Emma as sole fifty-fifty owners. Attached to it was an official letter from the Montana State Bank confirming that all mortgages, back taxes, and secondary liens totaling $412,000 had been paid in full and extinguished.
The second document was a commercial lease agreement between Sterling Continental and the Miller family.
"This is an infrastructure easement," Julian explained, pointing to the terms. "Sterling Continental will lease a fifty-yard utility strip along the southern perimeter of your five hundred acres for the next ninety-nine years. In exchange, the Miller estate will receive an annual dividend of three point two million dollars, beginning today."
Clara gasped, pressing her hand against her chest. "Three million... a year? Mr. Sterling, this is too much. We can't accept this!"
"You aren't accepting charity, Mrs. Miller," Julian said, his silver eyes completely steady. "That is the standard commercial value for the geographic pass your family has held for three generations. Arthur Vance was trying to steal it for pennies. I pay what things are worth."
Clara looked at the papers, then looked at Emma, her eyes overflowing with gratitude. "God bless you, Julian Sterling. God bless you."
Julian offered a warm, polite smile. "Marcus will assist you with the rest of the documentation, Mrs. Miller. If you'll excuse us, I’d like to speak with Emma in private for a moment."
