Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Well

By the following morning, the ripple effects of Julian Sterling’s presence in Montana were tearing through the state like a hurricane.
In the private penthouse suite on the hospital’s top floor, Julian stood before a wall of plasma screens, flanked by four high-level corporate attorneys and Marcus, his head of private security.
Emma sat at a conference table nearby, sipping hot tea, watching in awe as the massive machine of Sterling Continental dismantled Arthur Vance’s empire piece by piece.
"Federal warrants have been executed in three counties, Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported, holding a tablet displaying live security feeds from Missoula and Butte. "The FBI Financial Crimes Task Force raided Vance’s regional headquarters forty minutes ago. They seized his offshore ledgers, his encrypted servers, and the thallium storage logs from his refining depot."
"What about the state officials he bribed?" Julian asked without turning from the window.
"County Judge Morrison and Sheriff Higgins were taken into federal custody at their residences," one of the attorneys chimed in. "We provided the Department of Justice with the audio recordings recovered from Vance’s phone during the ranch confrontation. Hank Miller is currently singing like a canary to the federal prosecutors in Helena to avoid life imprisonment for attempted murder."
Emma looked down at her hands. The thought of Hank in prison brought her no joy, only a profound sense of relief that the parasite who had terrorized her mother was finally eradicated from their lives.
"And Arthur Vance himself?" Julian inquired, his silver eyes narrowing.
Marcus hesitated, his jaw tightening. "Vance posted bail two hours ago through an emergency hearing before the state supreme court justice could issue a flight-risk hold. His private jet is currently parked at the Missoula International private hangar, fueled for Zurich."
Julian turned around slowly. The temperature in the penthouse seemed to plummet.
"He posted bail?" Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
"A three-million-dollar cash bond wired through a Swiss holding company," Marcus confirmed. "The local judge who approved it is already under internal affairs investigation, but Vance has a ninety-minute window before the federal no-fly order takes effect."
Emma stood up from the conference table, panic flaring in her chest. "He’s going to get away with it? After trying to kill my mother and you, he’s just going to fly to Switzerland with hundreds of millions of dollars?"
Julian walked over to Emma. He looked down into her anxious green eyes, his demeanor calm, steady, and utterly unbothered.
"No one who touches what belongs to me flies away, Emma," Julian said softly.
He tapped an icon on Marcus’s tablet. A live satellite feed materialized on the center screen, tracking a sleek Gulfstream G650 taxiing out onto the private tarmac of Missoula International.
"Marcus," Julian commanded. "Activate the sovereign lien."
"Already in motion, sir," Marcus answered with a predatory grin.
Across the state line in Missoula, Arthur Vance sat in the plush leather cabin of his private jet, clutching an iced glass of scotch. Sweat drenched the collar of his silk shirt. His hands shook so violently the ice rattled against the glass.
"Tower, this is November-Seven-Zero-Alpha," the jet’s pilot crackled over the cockpit radio. "We are holding short of Runway Two-Niner. Request immediate departure clearance for international flight plan to Shannon, Ireland."
A long silence hung over the frequency.
Then, a cold, unfamiliar voice came through the avionics console. It wasn't the Missoula air traffic controller. It was the director of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Western Division.
*"November-Seven-Zero-Alpha, your departure clearance is indefinitely revoked. Be advised: the runway beneath your landing gear has been designated private property as of twelve minutes ago."*
Vance jumped up from his seat, spilling his drink across the carpet, and shoved his way into the cockpit. "What the hell are you talking about?! This is a public municipal airfield! Clear this plane for takeoff immediately!"
*"Mr. Vance,"* the voice replied coldly. *"Sterling Infrastructure Holdings acquired the municipal lease bonds for the Missoula aviation corridor at eight o'clock this morning for ninety-four million dollars. Mr. Julian Sterling has declared your aircraft a navigational hazard and ordered the tarmac sealed. Look out your cockpit window."*
Vance stared through the windshield.
Four massive Oshkosh airport snowplows and three armored federal SWAT carriers pulled onto the runway, forming an impenetrable wall of steel fifty yards in front of the jet’s nose. Behind them, two dozen federal agents with assault rifles drawn stepped out, surrounding the aircraft from every angle.
The cockpit door locks hissed as the hydraulic systems shut down automatically.
Vance fell back into the aisle of his plane, his phone buzzing violently in his palm.
A single text message appeared on the screen from an unlisted number:
*The wedding was canceled. Your flight is too.*
*— J.S.*
Back in the hospital penthouse, Emma watched the live feed as federal agents breached the jet’s cabin door, dragging Arthur Vance out in handcuffs onto the snowy tarmac, face down in the slush.
She covered her mouth, letting out a breathless, disbelieving laugh.
"It's over," she whispered.
Julian walked up beside her, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his broad shoulder.
May you like
"Not quite," Julian murmured gently. "There is still one piece of business left to settle."
