Chapter 7 - Eleanor’s Twisted Masterpiece

At the Fifth Precinct, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Arthur Sterling, an arrogant, silver-haired defense attorney whose suits cost more than most people's annual salaries, was pacing the hallway outside the interrogation room.
"My client is a prominent philanthropist!" Sterling was barking at the precinct captain. "Her late husband practically funded this entire township! You are holding a grandmother who intervened to save her grandchild from a mentally unstable, drug-abusing mother! If she is not released within the hour, I will have the Mayor’s office strip this precinct of its funding!"
Inside the interview room, Eleanor Campbell sat with her legs crossed, sipping water from a paper cup with an expression of supreme boredom. She had smoothed her hair. She had rehearsed her tears. She believed she was untouchable.
The heavy steel door swung open.
Ethan stepped into the room, followed by Detective Vance and Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lin.
Eleanor’s face instantly shifted. Her cold, arrogant sneer melted into an expression of desperate, heartbroken maternal agony.
"Ethan! Oh, thank God, my darling boy!" Eleanor cried, standing up and reaching her manicured hands toward him. "You must tell these barbarians to let me go! I did it for you, Ethan! That terrible woman was going to destroy you! She fell down, darling! She was screaming that she didn't want the baby! I had to protect Leo! I had to—"
"Shut your mouth," Ethan said.
The tone was so dead, so utterly devoid of warmth, that Eleanor stopped mid-sentence. Her hands hovered in the air, slowly dropping to her sides.
"Ethan, how dare you speak to your mother like—"
"I brought you a movie, Mom," Ethan said, stepping aside as Detective Vance set a heavy digital monitor onto the metal table and plugged it in.
Attorney Sterling rushed into the room, waving his legal pad. "What is this? My client will not be subjected to unauthorized questioning without—"
"Shut up and sit down, counselor," ADA Lin snapped, flashing a signed judicial warrant. "Or you can join your client as an unindicted co-conspirator to attempted first-degree murder."
Sterling’s mouth clicked shut.
Vance hit *Play*.
The high-definition screen illuminated the dingy interrogation room.
Eleanor’s own voice echoed through the speaker, crisp, cruel, and monstrous:
*“You are an anxious, uneducated little girl from the trailer parks... I control his nutrition. And you... you will learn your place.”*
Eleanor’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. The color drained from her face until she looked as pale as Grace had on the dining room floor.
On the screen, the meat tenderizer came down, smashing the phone.
Then came the basement footage. The sickening crunch of Grace’s ribs. Eleanor’s face caught in full infrared illumination, twisted in sadistic glee as she kicked her son's wife into the dark.
*"Die quietly, Grace... Leo will call me Mama."*
The footage stopped.
The room was deathly silent.
Attorney Sterling slowly closed his leather portfolio, took two steps back from Eleanor, and placed his hands in his pockets. He didn't say a single word. Even for a man paid to defend monsters, the depth of Eleanor's cruelty was utterly indefensible.
Eleanor looked up at Ethan, her breathing shallow, rapid, like a cornered animal.
"Ethan... Ethan, listen to me," she stammered, her voice losing its polished composure, turning shrill and desperate. "She wasn't worthy of you! I built this life for you! I couldn't let some nobody take away my legacy! I am your mother! Blood is thicker than water, Ethan! You owe me everything!"
Ethan leaned across the table, his face inches from hers.
"You are not my mother," Ethan whispered, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "You are a monster who almost murdered my wife and starved my son. You will spend the rest of your life rotting in a concrete cage. And when Leo grows up, he will never even know your name."
Eleanor lunged across the table, her fingernails clawing toward Ethan’s face. "YOU UNGRATEFUL BASTARD! HE IS MY GRANDSON! HE BELONGS TO ME!"

Two officers tackled her to the floor, forcing her wrists behind her back as the metal handcuffs clicked tightly shut.
