Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Monster

The front door of Ethan’s home had yellow crime scene tape fluttering against the brick pillars, but Detective Vance’s badge parted the perimeter officers. Ethan stepped back into the house, but he didn't feel fear anymore. The gut-wrenching shock had burned away, leaving behind a cold, lethal resolve.
The house still reeked of Eleanor’s perfume and the cold chicken left out on the table.
As they walked down the hall, Vance’s radio crackled.
*"Detective Vance, this is Station Five. We have a situation with the suspect, Eleanor Campbell."*
Vance unclipped his radio. "Go ahead, Dispatch."
*"Her high-powered attorney, Arthur Sterling, just arrived with an emergency injunction. They are claiming unlawful detention. Eleanor Campbell is alleging that the bruises on the victim were self-inflicted during a psychotic postpartum break, and she claims she was forced to defend herself and the infant. Sterling is demanding her immediate release on bail, and they’ve already filed an emergency petition for protective custody of the newborn."*
Ethan’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned stark white. "She’s already moving for Leo. Even from a holding cell, she’s trying to steal my son."
"Not on my watch," Vance muttered into the radio. "Hold her. Do not process that bail until I bring down the digital evidence."
They reached Ethan’s private study at the far end of the hallway. The door was locked with a biometric keypad. Ethan pressed his thumb to the scanner, and the deadbolt clicked.
Inside, hidden behind a false panel in the built-in bookshelf, was a commercial-grade Network Video Recorder (NVR) connected to four terabytes of encrypted storage. Ethan sat at his desk, his hands flying across the keyboard.
The monitors flickered to life.
Four quadrants appeared on the screen, displaying crisp, high-definition, audio-enabled surveillance footage from Tuesday morning through Friday evening.
Ethan cued Tuesday, 10:15 AM.
On the screen, the kitchen was in full view. The audio played with terrifying clarity.
They watched Eleanor Campbell walk to the counter, grab the breast milk bottles, and coldly pour them into the sink. They saw her snatch Grace’s wrist, heard her hiss the vicious threats: *"You belong to this house now... and no one is coming to save you."*
They watched Eleanor take the meat tenderizer and brutally smash Grace’s phone.
Vance stood over Ethan’s shoulder, his breath hissing through his teeth. "Jesus Christ. It’s premeditated torture."
"Keep watching," Ethan whispered, his voice shaking with pure fury.
He jumped the timeline to Wednesday night.
The basement camera—an infrared sensor Ethan had placed near the electrical panel—showed the wooden door flying open. It showed Eleanor delivering a brutal, deliberate kick into Grace’s side, the sickening *crack* of the ribs clearly audible over the speaker. It showed Eleanor dragging the screaming, weeping mother across the floor and throwing her into the dark cellar like garbage.
And then, Ethan clicked on Thursday night’s footage from the master bedroom.
The camera captured Eleanor Campbell sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a porcelain teacup. It showed her forcefully pinching Grace’s nose, prying open her jaw, and pouring the sedative-laced liquid down her throat while Grace choked and flailed in agony.
And finally, the legal paper.
Eleanor held Grace’s limp, drug-paralyzed hand, forcing the signature onto the document, smiling with the unhinged, demonic satisfaction of a predator claiming its kill.

"Print the export logs," Vance commanded, pulling out his cell phone and dialing the District Attorney directly. "Mr. Campbell, get this entire hard drive into an evidence bag. Your mother isn't getting bail. She isn't seeing the light of day for the rest of her miserable life."
