Chapter 27 - The Midnight Board

"That’s a lie! It’s a forged document!" Charles Bellamy bellowed, lunging toward Daniel with clenched fists, but Agent Vance stepped smoothly between them, pressing a federal indictment into Charles’s chest.
"Charles Bellamy, you are under arrest for conspiracy, maritime fraud, and racketeering," Vance stated calmly into the hot lights of the live broadcast.
"Look at the signature, Victoria!" Daniel commanded, ignoring Charles completely and thrusting the original yellowed parchment into Victoria’s trembling hands. "Look at the seal! Look at your mother’s maiden name!"
Victoria’s eyes scanned the document. Her knees buckled. The handwriting was identical to the letters her mother had kept locked away in a safe deposit box—letters Charles had always forbidden her to open.
"You... you told me the Mercers were thieves," Victoria stammered, turning toward Charles with raw horror in her voice. "You told me Daniel’s mother had embezzled the port funds... you made me pour that filth on her! You told me it was necessary to destroy their leverage before the merger!"
"Shut your mouth, you foolish girl!" Charles snarled, his mask of aristocratic sophistication peeling away to reveal the rabid desperation underneath. "You have nothing! Without my name, you are a nobody! A bastard orphan from an asylum!"
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered journalists and city officials. Cameras captured every micro-expression of Charles Bellamy’s monstrous confession.
"I gave you my ring," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of icy finality that resonated deeper than anger. "I offered you a real life, Victoria. But you chose his poison. You chose to humiliate an innocent woman who spent forty years protecting the very people your family tried to slaughter."
Victoria collapsed onto the stage, burying her face in her hands, her designer gown pooling around her in a posture of total, irredeemable ruin.

As federal agents placed handcuffs around Charles Bellamy’s wrists, his eyes locked onto Daniel with pure, venomous malice. "You think you've won, Mercer? You think Eleanor’s pathetic little ledger saves you? Check the harbor monitors, you fool! It’s already started!"
