Chapter 3 - The Evidence in Her Mother's Hands

Dad slowly helped me stand, keeping his left arm wrapped firmly around my shoulders to support my trembling weight.
My knees were bruised, throbbing with sharp pulses of pain from the hard marble impact, but Dad bore most of my burden.
The thirty-five guests stood frozen in place, some looking away in shame, others whispering behind their manicured hands.
Vanessa was busy helping Patricia climb up from the overturned wrought-iron chairs, adjusting her mother’s disheveled designer jacket.
“Richard, you have completely ruined our celebration!” Vanessa shouted, trying to mask her growing terror with indignant fury.
“You assaulted my mother! In front of all your business associates and closest friends! Do you realize what you’ve done?”
Dad didn't answer her; he didn't even look in her direction.
His sharp gray eyes were fixed entirely on the object glowing brightly on the marble terrace floor.
Patricia’s gold smartphone was lying beside a puddle of spilled vintage champagne, its screen still active and unlocked.
A bright red recording icon was blinking rhythmically in the upper corner of the display.
Patricia followed Dad’s gaze, and in an instant, all the haughty arrogance drained from her heavily made-up face.
Her eyes widened in sheer, naked panic as she realized what she had dropped in the scuffle.
“Richard, don't you dare touch my property!” Patricia shrieked, lurching forward with both hands outstretched like claws.
Dad took two calm, deliberate steps forward, stooping down and scooping the phone into his right palm before she could reach it.
He held it high out of her reach, turning his back to her as she clawed uselessly at his tailored suit jacket.
“Give that back to me right now!” Patricia screamed, her voice hitting a shrill, hysterical pitch that grated on everyone’s ears.
“That is my personal private device! You have no legal right to touch my belongings!”
Dad ignored her screeching, tapping the glowing screen with his thumb to inspect the active application.
The camera application was still running, having captured every single second of the confrontation from the very beginning.
Dad pressed the red stop button, saving the file, and then immediately tapped on the thumbnail in the bottom corner to open the gallery.
“What were you filming, Patricia?” Dad asked, his voice low, steady, and chillingly devoid of any emotion.
“Nothing! It was just video of the party before you burst in like a madman!” Patricia lied, her throat working in visible swallows.
“We were taking family memories! Give it back to me this instant or I will call the police and have you arrested for theft!”
“Go ahead and call them,” Dad said quietly, his thumb pressing the play button on the newly saved video file.
He cranked the phone’s volume to its absolute maximum and turned the speaker directly toward the crowd of watching guests.
In the dead silence of the Chicago night, Vanessa’s shrill, sadistic voice blasted through the phone’s speakers with crystal clarity.
“YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A DOG! KNOW YOUR PLACE!”
The recorded audio hit the terrace like a physical blow, causing several women in the crowd to gasp and cover their mouths.
On the high-resolution screen, the footage played out in sickening, high-definition color for anyone nearby to witness.
The camera showed Vanessa yanking the pale-blue dress, dragging me off my feet, and forcefully strapping the dog collar around my throat.
It showed the brutal downward jerk of the chain leash, my knees slamming against the stone, and my terrified face pleading for mercy.
Worst of all, the video clearly captured Patricia’s cruel laughter from behind the lens, mocking every tear that fell from my eyes.
“Look at her crawl! The little princess finally knows her place in this house!” Patricia’s recorded voice cackled through the speaker.
The video continued, documenting the moment Vanessa raised her hand to strike me just seconds before the patio doors flew open.
Dad stared at the glowing screen, his face hardening into an expression of absolute, terrifying stillness.
The guests around the terrace began to murmur loudly, the truth now impossible to deny, disguise, or excuse as a lighthearted joke.
Arthur Pendelton, Dad’s oldest business partner and a respected philanthropist, stepped forward, shaking his silver head in disgust.
“Good God, Vanessa,” Pendelton said, his voice dripping with revulsion. “You did that to Richard’s child on purpose.”
“Arthur, stay out of this!” Vanessa yelled desperately, spinning around to face the guests who were now looking at her like a monster.
“It was taken out of context! Emily provoked me! She threw a drink at my dress before any of you arrived!”
“You lying snake!” I cried out, finding my voice through the tears, leaning against Dad’s chest. “I never touched your dress!”
Dad tapped the screen again, swiping back into the phone’s photo and video gallery with methodical precision.
Patricia lunged forward again, her fingernails scraping against Dad’s sleeve, her eyes bulging with absolute dread.
“Richard, stop! That is private! You are invading my privacy!” she screamed, completely abandoning her high-society composure.
Dad pushed her back with a firm, unyielding arm, keeping his eyes locked onto the illuminated grid of media files.
What he saw on that phone wasn't just the video from five minutes ago; there was an entire album titled with my initials: "E.H."
Dad’s thumb tapped the album folder, and a grid of dozens of photos and short videos opened up before his eyes.
His breath hitched in his throat, his face draining of color until he looked like a walking ghost beneath the chandeliers.
“What... what is all this?” Dad whispered, his voice trembling with a level of horror I had never heard in him before.
Vanessa took three steps backward, her back pressing hard against the broken wood of the ruined banquet table.
She looked at her mother with wide, panicked eyes, realizing that Patricia’s sick habit of hoarding trophies had just destroyed them both.
Patricia had been secretly documenting their systematic abuse of me for months, keeping a digital record of every cruel trick they played.
There were photos of my personal journals torn to shreds, images of my designer clothes soaked in bleach in the laundry room sink.
There were audio recordings of Vanessa berating me in the kitchen while Dad was at the office, threatening to have him cut me off completely.
There was even a video from three weeks ago showing Patricia pouring red wine across my mother’s heirloom wedding veil while laughing hysterically.
Dad slowly lifted his eyes from the glowing screen, staring at the woman he had intended to marry in front of god and their peers.
“YOU JUST RECORDED YOUR OWN CRIMES!” Dad roared, the phone shaking in his white-knuckled grip.

The sound of his voice sent a shockwave through the terrace, causing several guests to take instinctive steps back toward the mansion exits.
Vanessa stood paralyzed, her lips parting and closing without making a sound, her platinum facade crumbling into dust before thirty-five witnesses.
