Chapter 1 - The Leash and the Champagne

“YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A DOG! KNOW YOUR PLACE!”
My father’s fiancée grabbed the collar of my expensive pale-blue satin dress and jerked me viciously forward.
Before my mind could comprehend the sudden cruelty, she snapped a thick black leather pet collar around my throat.
The metallic click echoed over the laughter of thirty-five wealthy Chicago socialites sipping champagne on the garden terrace.
She didn’t hesitate for a single heartbeat before yanking the attached heavy chain leash downward with all her strength.
My heels slipped instantly across the polished Italian marble floor.
My balance vanished in a blur of spinning crystal chandeliers and horrified faces.
My left knee slammed hard against the cold, unforgiving stone with a sickening thud.
A sharp gasp of pain tore from my lungs as my hand scrambled to keep my face from smashing into the floor.
Thirty-five elite guests froze in absolute, breathless silence.
Beside Vanessa stood her mother, Patricia, grinning like a predator at a fresh kill while holding her gold smartphone steady.
“Look at her crawl!” Patricia cackled, zooming the lens right into my tear-streaked face.
“The little princess finally knows her place in this house!”
I was twenty years old, an honors college student who had never harmed a soul in my life.
The woman kneeling over me, sneering with scarlet lipstick and diamond earrings, was supposed to marry my father in three weeks.
I reached up with both hands, desperately clawing at the thick leather band digging into my windpipe.
“Vanessa, please, take this off!” I sobbed, tears blurring the glittering lights above the courtyard.
Her grip on the chain only tightened, forcing my chin down toward the dust on her red designer stilettos.
“You thought you could run this estate forever, didn’t you, Emily?” she whispered, loud enough for the entire front row of guests to hear.
“You thought your daddy’s money belonged to you, but from tonight on, you do what I say, when I say, or you sleep in the kennel outside.”
Several guests gasped in horror, while a few cowardly socialites offered nervous, terrified chuckles, unsure if it was an elaborate, twisted joke.
Nobody stepped forward to stop her.
These were men and women who had dined at our table for a decade, people who had watched me grow up after my mother’s death.
Yet they stood like frozen statues, paralyzed by Vanessa’s venomous authority and the sheer audacity of her savagery.
I looked into the crowd, seeking any ounce of mercy, but all I saw was Patricia’s phone camera inches from my eyes.
“Smile for the camera, darling,” Patricia mocked, her manicured fingers tapping the screen to focus on my humiliation.
“We’re going to show everyone what happens when a spoiled brat tries to disrespect my daughter!”
My father, Richard Harrison, was supposed to be in New York on an emergency business acquisition until midnight.
Vanessa had carefully planned this private pre-engagement toast specifically because she believed he was hundreds of miles away.
She had spent months playing the sweet, devoted angel whenever Richard was in the room, whispering soft words and baking pastries.
She had called me her sweetest angel whenever he smiled, then hissed filthy threats into my ear the second he walked through the door.
Whenever I tried to tell him about the missing heirlooms, the cruel insults, and the cold isolation, Vanessa had twisted it into jealousy.
“She just can’t bear to see another woman making you happy, Richard,” Vanessa would whisper in his ear late at night.
My father, desperate for love after seven lonely years of mourning my late mother, had wanted so badly to believe her lies.
Eventually, I had stopped speaking up, swallowing my pride and enduring the torment just to preserve his fragile smile.
That silence had led me directly to this stone floor, chained like a stray animal under the laughter of monsters.
“Bark for your guests, Emily,” Vanessa ordered, yanking the chain upward so violently that my breath hitched in my chest.
“Show them how well-trained Richard’s little girl really is!”
I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing my trembling palms against the icy marble, praying for the earth to open and swallow me whole.
The heavy chain rattled in Vanessa’s manicured fist, clinking against the stemware on the nearby banquet table.
Patricia leaned closer, tilting the phone horizontally to capture every inch of my degradation for her private entertainment.
“Go on, say thank you to your new mother!” Patricia hissed, her eyes gleaming with absolute malice.
My dignity was slipping through my fingers like water, crushed beneath the weight of their relentless cruelty.
I could feel the cold buckle pinching the sensitive skin of my throat, leaving a fiery ring of friction.
I gripped the chain with trembling fingers, refusing to utter a sound, biting my bottom lip until the metallic taste of blood touched my tongue.
“Defiant until the end, aren’t you?” Vanessa sneered, raising her free hand to strike across my cheek.
The air in the garden terrace grew impossibly still, every witness holding their breath as her hand reached its peak.
Then, from the deep shadows of the main foyer, the massive double glass patio doors flew open with a deafening crash.
A heavy black leather travel duffel bag slammed against the marble threshold, sliding across the floor and knocking over a champagne bucket.

The shatter of crystal and the roar of a furious voice ripped through the night like a thunderclap.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?”
