Chapter 2 - The Crash of Glass and Broken Vows

My head snapped toward the terrace doors through a haze of tears.

My father stood framed in the arched doorway under the harsh glare of the garden floodlights.

He was still wearing his impeccably tailored three-piece black charcoal suit, his silk tie slightly loosened from his flight.

He had taken an earlier charter jet back to Chicago just to surprise his bride-to-be with an antique emerald necklace.

Instead, his piercing gray eyes took in the horrific spectacle laid out before him on the marble terrace.

He saw the thirty-five paralyzed socialites staring at the ground in collective shame.

He saw Patricia holding up her phone like a front-row spectator at a circus.

He saw Vanessa standing tall in her crimson dress, gripping a black leather leash.

And at the other end of that leash, trembling on her knees with a dog collar around her throat, was his only daughter.

For one terrifying second, all the color drained from my father’s face, leaving him as pale as marble.

Then, a feral, earth-shaking rage swept across his features, transforming him into a man possessed by pure fury.

“GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!” he roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers hanging from the pergola.

He moved faster than I had ever seen a human being move in my life.

Before Vanessa could even register the sound of his voice, Richard Harrison crossed the terrace in three massive strides.

He didn't politely ask questions; he seized the chain leash directly from Vanessa’s grip with such violent force that she shrieked.

The metal links ripped from her manicured fingers, stripping the skin off her knuckles as he threw the leash aside.

Vanessa stumbled forward, trying to grab his arm, crying out his name in a panic.

“Richard, wait! It’s not what it looks like—”

Dad didn't even let her finish the sentence; he shoved her backward with a single forearm.

Vanessa went flying into the long banquet table behind her, her high heels catching on the white linen tablecloth.

Dozens of vintage champagne flutes toppled over like dominoes, crashing into silver platters and shattering into hundreds of glittering shards.

A massive three-tiered floral centerpiece collapsed onto the marble floor, spilling dark water and crushed white orchids everywhere.

The earsplitting sound of breaking glass echoed off the limestone walls of the estate, silencing every breath in the garden.

Dad stepped directly between Vanessa and me, his broad shoulders shielding my trembling frame completely from view.

His chest heaved with heavy, ragged breaths, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles were bone-white.

“Are you out of your goddamn mind?” he bellowed at Vanessa, his voice vibrating with venom.

Vanessa scrambled upright against the ruined table, clutching her crimson gown as her platinum curls fell over her terrified face.

“Richard, you’re overreacting!” she screamed, her voice cracking as she tried desperately to regain her composure.

“Overreacting?” Dad pointed a shaking finger at the thick leather band still fastened around my neck.

“You put a dog collar on my daughter! You forced her onto her knees in front of thirty-five people!”

“It was just a harmless joke!” Vanessa lied frantically, glancing at the silent crowd for support that never came.

“We were just having fun, Richard! She was being difficult about the wedding seating and we were playing around!”

“A joke?” Dad took a step toward her, his eyes blazing with such intensity that Vanessa visibly shrank back against the splintered wood.

Before Dad could say another word, Patricia stepped forward, her face twisted in indignation and arrogance.

“Richard, don't you dare speak to my daughter like that!” the older woman snapped, waving her manicured hand in his face.

“You have spoiled that girl rotten since her mother died, and she has treated Vanessa with nothing but disrespect!”

Patricia took another aggressive step forward, puffing up her chest like she owned every square foot of the Harrison estate.

“The girl needed discipline, and somebody had to teach her that she doesn't run this family anymore!”

Dad turned his lethal gaze toward Patricia, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper.

“Stay out of this, Patricia, before I forget my manners entirely.”

Patricia’s face flushed deep crimson with offended rage.

“How dare you threaten me in front of these people!” she shrieked, raising her palm to slap Richard across the face.

She swung her arm with all the venom she had stored up for months.

Dad didn't flinch; his hand shot out like an iron vise, catching Patricia’s wrist mid-air just inches from his cheek.

The impact was sharp and instantaneous, freezing the older woman in her tracks.

“Don't touch me,” Dad growled, twisting her wrist just enough to force her back before shoving her away from our space.

Patricia lost her footing in her designer pumps, stumbling backward into a row of heavy wrought-iron dining chairs.

Two heavy chairs toppled over with a thunderous clatter, sending Patricia crashing against the stone floor in a heap of silk and pearls.

As she hit the deck, her gold smartphone flew from her grip, skidding across the wet marble and landing face-up near Dad’s polished shoe.

The screen was brightly illuminated, glowing beneath the garden lights, completely intact.

Vanessa screamed, rushing toward Dad to protect her mother, but he simply pivoted, creating an impenetrable wall of steel.

“STAY AWAY FROM US!” Dad roared, the sound bouncing off the high stone archways.

Neither woman moved an inch; they were paralyzed by the realization that their mask of control had shattered completely.

Dad turned his back on them entirely, disregarding their existence as if they were nothing more than dirt on his soles.

He dropped down to his knees right in front of me, his harsh expression instantly melting into an ocean of agonizing sorrow.

“Emily,” he whispered, his large, calloused hands reaching out to touch my shaking shoulders.

“Sweetheart, look at me. Look at your dad.”

I lifted my head, my vision blurred by hot, relentless tears, my whole body vibrating with the shock of the assault.

When Dad saw the dark red welt forming beneath the black leather band on my neck, a terrible, guttural groan tore from his chest.

“Oh, God... Emily, my baby girl,” he choked out, his fingers trembling as he reached for the buckle behind my neck.

He unfastened the cold metal prong with painstaking gentleness, terrified of causing me another fraction of pain.

The heavy leather collar came free, dropping from his hands and clattering uselessly against the stone alongside the chain leash.

The moment the weight left my throat, a ragged sob ripped through my chest, and I collapsed forward into his arms.

“DAD! THEY HUMILIATED ME!” I wept into the wool of his lapel, clinging to his jacket like a drowning child.

He wrapped his powerful arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest, rocking me back and forth amidst the ruins of the party.

“I’ve got you,” he whispered, his own voice cracking as tears filled his gray eyes. “I’ve got you, Emily. Nobody will ever touch you again.”

I pressed my face into his shoulder, whispering the words that had haunted me for months: “I told you she hated me, Dad. I told you.”

May you like

My father closed his eyes, his jaw trembling as the full, crushing weight of his failure crashed down upon his soul.

“I know,” he whispered, kissing the top of my chestnut hair while the crowd watched in stunned silence. “I am so sorry I didn't listen.”
