Chapter 8 - Stripped of Gold

The silence in the penthouse was thick and heavy with unspoken dread.
The thirty elite guests remained glued to their chairs, nobody daring to breathe too loudly.
Adrian Moretti did not glance at them again.
His attention was entirely focused on the two women standing before him.
Maria Ramos was still trembling, clutching Emily’s arm as if the entire world might collapse at any second.
Her uniform was ruined, her hands were cut, and her face was lined with the exhaustion of twenty years of unyielding toil.
Beside her stood Emily, her royal-blue gown stained with dark coffee, but her spine straight as an iron rod.
Adrian stepped toward them, his expression softening into something rare and profound: true remorse.
He looked down at the puddle of coffee at his feet.
Without hesitation, the man who controlled half the state of Illinois bent down on one knee.
The guests gasped in silent astonishment.
Adrian Moretti never knelt for anyone.
He reached his hand directly into the muddy pool of coffee and retrieved the tiny, silk white rose.
He stood back up, using his silk handkerchief to gently wipe away the brown liquid from the delicate fabric.
The petals were bruised and flattened, but the structure of the handmade flower remained intact.
Adrian stepped forward and held the flower out to Maria.
“I believe this belongs to you, Maria,” Adrian said softly.
Maria’s breath caught in her throat.
Tears spilled over her lashes as she reached out with trembling, scarred fingers to take the silk flower back.
“Thank you, Mr. Moretti,” she whispered, her voice cracking with deep emotion.
“I made it for her four years ago when she was accepted into college.”
“I promised her I would give it to her on graduation night.”
Adrian looked at Emily, then down at the diploma clutched against her chest.
“What did you study, Emily?” Adrian asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.
“Corporate Law and Forensic Accounting, sir,” Emily answered clearly.
“Graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University.”
A slow, appreciative smile spread across Adrian Moretti’s face.
“Forensic accounting,” he repeated thoughtfully.
“Then you already knew the numbers on those charity reports were fraudulent before you walked into this house tonight.”
Emily nodded firmly.
“I found the discrepancies three weeks ago while reviewing the foundation’s public tax disclosures for my senior thesis.”
“I knew someone was laundering money through my scholarship fund.”
“I came here tonight to confront Vanessa privately after the ceremony.”
“But when my mother didn’t show up to the auditorium, I realized Vanessa was keeping her here by force.”
“I didn't care about the scholarship anymore.”
“I didn't care about my career.”
“I only cared about saving my mother.”
Adrian turned toward the grand table, his eyes sweeping over the silent, terrified billionaires.
“Did you hear that, gentlemen?” Adrian asked, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
“A twenty-two-year-old girl working three jobs figured out a forty-million-dollar laundering scheme that none of your high-priced financial directors caught.”
The businessmen bowed their heads in shame, completely unable to meet Adrian’s gaze.
Adrian turned back to the mother and daughter.
“Maria, you have given this house twenty-two years of faithful service,” Adrian said, loud enough for every soul in the estate to hear.
“You raised a daughter with more honor, more intelligence, and more spine than anyone currently seated at my table.”
“Your days of cleaning this mansion are over.”
Maria’s heart skipped a beat in sudden terror.
“Mr. Moretti, please... where will we go?”
Adrian held up a calming hand.
“You misunderstand me, Maria.”
“You are not being dismissed.”
“You are being retired with full executive honors.”
Adrian turned to Marco, who had just stepped back into the room after issuing the tactical orders.
“Marco.”
“Yes, Boss.”
“Prepare the deed for the lakeside estate in Evanston.”
“Transfer full ownership into Maria Ramos’s name immediately.”
“And allocate a lifetime monthly stipend of twenty-five thousand dollars from the Moretti private trust, guaranteed for the rest of her life.”
Maria staggered backward, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute disbelief.
“Mr. Moretti... no... that is too much... I cannot accept that!”
“You can, and you will,” Adrian replied with absolute finality.
“You earned every square inch of that house through twenty-two years of loyalty that money could never buy.”
“And as for you, Emily,” Adrian continued, his sharp gray eyes locking onto the young graduate.
“You said your scholarship was revoked?”
Emily lifted her chin proudly.
“I don’t need her blood money, Mr. Moretti.”
“I have two arms and a brain.”
“I will pay off my student loans myself.”
Adrian chuckled, a rich, dark sound that seemed to chase away the lingering poison in the room.
May you like
“You won’t have to pay a single cent, Miss Ramos.”
“Because starting tomorrow morning, you are the new Chief Auditor of the Moretti Family Foundation.”
