Chapter 6 - The Whisper of Treason

Whatever Marco whispered into Adrian’s ear didn't just break the tension; it shattered the reality of the room.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, freezing pinpricks.

He did not yell.

He did not throw anything.

He simply turned his head toward Vanessa Sterling with a slow, mechanical precision.

Vanessa took another step back, her knees hitting a dining chair.

She lost her balance and tumbled awkwardly onto the seat, her breathing coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

“Marco,” Adrian said, his voice flat and void of any human warmth.

“Repeat what you just told me.”

“Speak loudly enough so our esteemed business partners can hear every single word.”

Marco stood at attention, his posture rigid, his voice cutting across the vast hall with absolute clarity.

“Ten minutes ago, Boss, our cybersecurity unit intercepted a private data transfer from Miss Sterling’s personal terminal.”

“She wasn't just skimming donations from her orphan foundation.”

“Over the last eighteen months, Miss Sterling has systematically funneled forty-two million dollars out of the Moretti shipping logistics accounts.”

A collective gasp ripped through the table of billionaires.

Forty-two million dollars.

That was not petty theft from a housemaid’s tuition fund.

That was an act of full-scale economic warfare against the Moretti syndicate.

“Go on, Marco,” Adrian instructed coldly.

“Where did the money go?”

Marco pulled a thin tablet from inside his suit jacket and read from the encrypted screen.

“The funds were laundered through three dummy corporations registered under the Sterling Hope Foundation in the Cayman Islands.”

“And the final recipient of the transfers is an offshore account registered to Donald Falcone.”

The name fell upon the room like an atomic bomb.

Donald Falcone was Adrian Moretti’s bitterest rival.

The Falcone family had spent the last decade trying to carve out Chicago’s northern shipping ports from Moretti control.

Three of Adrian’s cousins had died in a car bombing orchestrated by the Falcones five years ago.

And Adrian’s own fiancée had been sending them millions of dollars under the guise of an orphan charity.

“No... Adrian, it’s not what it looks like!” Vanessa shrieked, scrambling to her feet, knocking her chair backward.

“They blackmailed me!”

“The Falcones threatened my family!”

“I had no choice!”

Marco didn't even look at her as he continued reading the forensic report.

“The digital signature on the latest transfer was authorized forty-five minutes ago, Boss.”

“Right before she came out to the dining hall to serve dessert.”

“The transfer included the security access codes for the South Side distribution warehouse.”

“The Falcones are scheduled to raid the terminal tonight at midnight.”

Adrian slowly checked the gold watch on his wrist.

It was precisely ten-fifteen.

He looked back up at the woman he had promised to marry in three months.

The diamond engagement ring on her finger was worth three hundred thousand dollars.

The necklace resting against her throat had belonged to Adrian’s late grandmother.

She had lived in unimaginable luxury, surrounded by servants, bodyguards, and absolute privilege.

And all the while, she had been plotting his execution while crushing the housemaid beneath her heel to pass the time.

“You weren’t teaching Maria a lesson about responsibility tonight, were you, Vanessa?” Adrian asked softly.

He took two slow, measured steps toward her.

“You didn’t want Maria to leave tonight because she was scheduled to lock the South Wing service doors at eleven o’clock.”

“The very doors your friends the Falcones were planning to enter through.”

Vanessa’s jaw trembled so violently she couldn’t form a coherent word.

Her face was slick with sweat and ruined makeup.

She looked around the room, begging with her eyes, but every single guest looked away.

The men who had laughed at her jokes five minutes ago were staring at the ceiling, pretending she didn't exist.

In Adrian Moretti’s world, association with a traitor was a death sentence.

Nobody was going to stand within ten feet of Vanessa Sterling tonight.

Maria Ramos stood beside her daughter, her hand clamped over her mouth in sheer horror.

She had spent five years serving this woman breakfast in bed.

She had washed her clothes, brushed her hair, and endured her endless insults.

She had believed Vanessa was just a cruel, spoiled brat born into too much money.

She never imagined that this beautiful socialite was a ruthless viper capable of selling out an entire empire.

“Mr. Moretti,” Emily spoke up, her voice surprisingly steady despite the madness unfolding around her.

“She used my name on those accounts, didn't she?”

Marco looked up from his tablet, nodding gravely at the young graduate.

“Yes, Miss Ramos.”

“One of the shell companies receiving the stolen shipping funds is named ‘The E. Ramos Educational Trust.’”

“If the federal authorities had raided those accounts tomorrow, your name would have been on the wire transfers.”

“You would have faced twenty years in federal prison for grand larceny and money laundering.”

Emily’s eyes flared with a fury so intense it rivaled Adrian’s own.

May you like

“You didn’t just try to steal my mother’s life,” Emily hissed at Vanessa.

“You tried to turn me into your scapegoat.”
