Chapter 20 - The Voice from the Grave

The freezing currents of the Hudson River lapped against the decaying wooden pilings of Pier 42. Dawn was beginning to break over the New York skyline, casting a sickly, bruised-purple hue across the heavy rain clouds.

Daniel dragged himself and Emma up the rusted maintenance ladder of an abandoned municipal pump station, collapsing onto the concrete apron of the deserted pier. Both of them were drenched, covered in grime, and shivering uncontrollably in the biting morning wind.

Fifty yards away, the yellow lights of an early-morning commuter ferry cut through the mist. Safety was across the river. Across the river lay federal jurisdiction, the Southern District of New York, and the offices of the United States Attorney General.

Daniel fumbled with his waterlogged phone—a burner he had kept sealed in a zip-top bag inside his waterproof boot. His hands shook so violently he could barely dial the emergency direct line Arthur Vance had given him yesterday.

Wait. Not Arthur.

Evelyn had given him a direct number before the bunker fell—the personal line of Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed, Claire’s former law school classmate.

The line rang once. Twice. Three times.

"Reed," a sharp, cautious voice answered.

"Marcus... it’s Daniel Vance," Daniel gasped, spitting blood onto the concrete. "Claire’s husband. I have the Promethium sequence. I have the physical peptide culture. Mercer is hunting us at Pier 42. We need federal extraction now!"

Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds.

"Daniel?" Reed’s voice shifted, turning remarkably calm. "Stay exactly where you are. Do not move. I have a tactical response unit rolling toward the West Side Highway right now. Where is the locket?"

Daniel paused. A cold prickle of instinct crawled up his spine.

"How did you know about the locket, Marcus?" Daniel whispered. "I only said I had the peptide culture."

The line went dead.

Daniel dropped the phone, his blood turning to liquid nitrogen. He spun around, grabbing Emma and pulling her toward the rusted corrugated metal of the abandoned warehouse behind them.

The heavy thrum of twin helicopter rotors tore through the morning fog above.

A sleek, unmarked black Airbus H145 helicopter descended over the pier, its searchlight blinding Daniel and Emma in a circle of searing white light. Armed men in tactical gear dropped from the skids, surrounding the perimeter of the pier with assault rifles leveled.

Stepping out from the shadows of the warehouse entrance was Julian Mercer. His charcoal coat was torn, his face smeared with soot, but his eyes were burning with triumphant malice. Behind him stood Arthur Vance, clutching a satellite phone, and beside Arthur stood a tall man in a navy federal windbreaker—Marcus Reed.

"Did you really believe Claire was the only one who had friends in high places, Daniel?" Mercer shouted over the roar of the helicopter blades, stepping toward them across the wet concrete. "The Department of Justice, the FDA, the state courts... they are institutions made of men. And men have mortgages, Daniel. Men have appetites."

Mercer reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, portable audio recorder. He clicked the play button.

Claire’s voice—fragile, labored, but unmistakably hers—echoed through the speaker, recorded during her final hours in the hospice bed:

*"Julian... if you are listening to this, you have already broken into my safe. You have already threatened Daniel. But you don't understand what I did with the final strand. I didn't hide the cure in the locket. The locket is the trigger. The cure... the real sequence... is inside Emma's blood."*

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. He looked down at Emma in horror.

Emma stood motionless, the searchlight catching her wide, dark eyes.

"Claire didn't just synthesize the antidote, Daniel," Mercer said, smiling as his men raised their rifles, stepping forward to close the trap. "She used her own daughter as the living incubator. The girl’s bone marrow carries the only viable genetic sequence on earth."

May you like

Mercer extended his hand, pointing his silver signet ring straight at Emma's chest.

"Hand her over, Daniel. Or watch her bleed out on this concrete."
