Chapter 15 - The Ballerina's Secret

The sound of Emma’s scream shattered Daniel’s paralysis. Adrenaline, primitive and savage, flooded his veins, overriding the blinding agony in his cracked ribs. He rolled onto his stomach, his bloody fingers scraping across the floorboards until they locked around the cold steel barrel of the fallen Remington.

He hauled himself up against the banister, dragging his left leg as he ascended the stairs two steps at a time.

At the end of the hallway, Emma’s bedroom was in chaos. Books were ripped from the shelves, stuffed animals disemboweled across the carpet, and the mattress shoved askew. Standing over Emma, who was curled tightly beneath her white writing desk, was the lead intruder. In his gloved left hand, he held the crushed remnants of the antique musical jewelry box.

"Where is the micro-drive, kid?" the man hissed, grabbing Emma by the hood of her sweater and dragging her out into the open. "Tell me, or your father doesn't make it through the night!"

"I don't know! I don't know!" Emma wept, kicking wildly.

Daniel appeared in the doorway like a specter of vengeance, his face smeared with blood, the shotgun resting against his hip.

"Let her go," Daniel whispered.

The intruder’s eyes widened behind the balaclava. He reached for his sidearm, but Daniel didn't give him the chance. He fired.

The buckshot tore through the intruder’s right shoulder, obliterating the joint and sending his pistol clattering across the baseboard. The man crashed against the closet doors with a scream of agony, clutching his ruined arm as bright arterial crimson sprayed across the floral wallpaper.

Daniel stepped forward, the barrel of the smoking shotgun pressed directly between the intruder’s eyes.

"Who sent you?" Daniel growled, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.

The man breathed heavily through his teeth, blood bubbling behind his mask. "You... you can't stop him, Vance. Mercer... Mercer owns the state police. He owns the ports. You're already dead."

Daniel reversed the shotgun and smashed the heavy walnut stock against the man’s temple, knocking him instantly unconscious.

Emma threw her arms around Daniel’s waist, sobbing hysterically into his shirt. "Dad! Dad, you're bleeding!"

"I’m okay, baby. I’m okay," Daniel gasped, falling to his knees and pulling her tightly against his chest. He looked at the floor where the crushed jewelry box lay.

The false bottom of the box had cracked open when the intruder stomped on it. Sticking out from the fractured mahogany was not a microchip, nor a key.

It was a small, circular metallic disc with an engraved glass lens—an encrypted optical memory card used exclusively in advanced military and biochemical research facilities. Taped to the back of the disc was a handwritten note in Claire’s unmistakable, sloping handwriting:

*Daniel—If you are reading this, Julian Mercer has found you. The cold storage vault in Newark is a trap; Mercer built the facility himself. Do not go there. Take the optical disc to 144 Desbrosses Street, Manhattan. Ask for 'The Archivist.' And whatever you do... do not trust Arthur.*

Daniel’s blood turned to ice in his veins.

*Do not trust Arthur.*

Arthur Vance. The loyal family attorney who had handed him the brass key just hours ago. The man who had pointed him straight toward the Union Cold Storage facility in Newark.

At that moment, the second intruder, who had remained downstairs, did not come up the steps. Instead, the heavy screech of tires outside signaled a rapid retreat. The house fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence, broken only by the sound of rain hammering against the broken windows.

Daniel grabbed Emma’s hand, pocketed the optical disc, and picked up the intruder’s discarded handgun.

"Pack your coat, Emma," Daniel said, his voice flat, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "We're leaving. Now."
