Chapter 12 - The Unregistered Vault

The mahogany-paneled office of Vance & Sterling LLP smelled of old paper, leather, and stale tobacco. Outside, rain had begun to lash against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Chicago, turning the skyscrapers into gray, towering monoliths.

Arthur Vance dropped a thick manila folder onto the desk between them. The folder was bound with red string, sealed with red wax that had been freshly broken. Inside lay a single, yellowed sheet of heavy vellum and a heavy brass key—not a standard safety deposit key, but something older, marked with four deep, irregular notches along its spine.

"What is this, Arthur?" Daniel asked, refusing to touch it. His heart felt bruised inside his ribs. "The bank box in Manhattan was emptied. The stock certificates were transferred to Emma’s trust. Victoria is awaiting sentencing in county lockup. What could Claire possibly have left unsaid?"

Arthur removed his reading glasses, rubbing the bridge of his crooked nose. "When Claire realized the cancer was terminal, she spent her final three months restructuring her holdings. Everyone thought she was simply preparing for Emma’s financial future. Victoria thought Claire was hoarding the buyout capital from the pharmaceutical merger."

"She wasn't?"

"The buyout was a smokescreen, Daniel." Arthur leaned forward, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. "Claire wasn't just a vice president of research. Before she married you, before she left Boston, Claire worked under Dr. Julian Vance—my brother—developing synthetic gene delivery protocols for Helios Biosystems."

Daniel frowned, the names swimming in his tired mind. "Claire was an organic chemist, Arthur. She told me she managed supply chains."

"Because if you knew what she had discovered, you would have become a target ten years ago," Arthur said ruthlessly. "Three months before her diagnosis, Helios Biosystems was quietly acquired by a private venture syndicate called Apex Vanguard. They didn't want the company for its staff. They wanted Claire’s proprietary research on neuro-regenerative cellular vectors. A patent worth an estimated four hundred million dollars."

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face. "Four hundred million..."

"Claire discovered that Apex had falsified Phase III clinical trials. The drug was causing fatal cerebral hemorrhages in seventy percent of test subjects, but Apex was preparing to push it through overseas markets under shell corporations. When Claire threatened to blow the whistle to the FDA, she had her first collapse. The doctors called it aggressive glioblastoma. But Claire..." Arthur’s hands shook slightly as he tapped the vellum sheet. "Claire never believed her cancer was natural."

The room seemed to tilt. The steady ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a detonator.

"She was poisoned?" Daniel choked out, rage and sheer horror tearing through him.

"She couldn't prove it before the tumors spread," Arthur whispered. "So she hid the raw data, the internal trial logs, and the original, uncorrupted synthesis formulas. Not in a bank. Not in a digital cloud that could be hacked or erased. She leased a private, subterranean vault beneath the old Union Cold Storage facility in Newark under the name 'E. M. Sinclair'—Emma's initials and Claire's mother's maiden name."

Arthur pushed the four-notched brass key toward Daniel.

"Victoria was hired, Daniel. Her debts, her gambling, her eviction notices—they were all purchased by Apex Vanguard. Victoria wasn't trying to steal a company ledger for herself. Apex convinced her that Emma's locket held the combination to the Newark vault. But Victoria was too stupid, too brutal. She assumed it was a standard key."

Daniel looked at the heavy brass key. It sat on the polished mahogany like a live grenade.

"And if Victoria failed?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with murderous coldness.

"Then Apex would send someone who doesn't use amateur threats," Arthur said grimly. "They gave Victoria thirty days to locate the assets. Her time expired yesterday. If you saw a car outside Emma's school today, Daniel... they aren't looking to negotiate anymore. They're coming to take the girl."
