Chapter 14 - The Viper in the Nursery

By morning, the safe house had transformed into a command post. Detective Miller’s team had deployed tactical sweeps across the adjacent skyscraper, finding only a discarded disposable burner phone and a set of professional climbing harnesses.
"She had line-of-sight directly into the nursery," Maya said, analyzing the ballistic trajectories on the digital floor plan. "She’s testing your reaction times. She wants you terrified. Victoria is a sadist; she doesn’t just want to take Leo. She wants Clara to watch everything fall apart piece by piece."
"We need round-the-clock medical monitoring for Clara and the baby," Julian insisted, pacing the hardwood floor. "Clara’s blood pressure is spiking. If her trauma triggers a neurological relapse, she could go into shock."
At 10:00 AM, the agency-vetted private pediatric nurse arrived. Her name was Evelyn Drake, a middle-aged woman with stellar credentials from Johns Hopkins, graying hair pulled into a severe bun, and thick horn-rimmed glasses. She carried a stainless-steel medical kit and presented all her credentials to Marcus at the security checkpoint.
"I’m here to administer Master Leo’s preventative vaccines and run a routine vitals check on Mrs. Montgomery," Evelyn spoke with a calm, grandmotherly cadence.
Marcus ran her biometric thumbprint against the state database. The green light chimed. "All clear. Room 4, down the hall."
Clara was sitting on the sofa, clutching a mug of herbal tea, watching Evelyn prepare a small syringe. Leo was playing with a wooden block on the carpet by her feet. There was something methodical, almost robotic about the nurse’s movements that made Clara’s stomach tighten.
"He’s such a robust little boy," Evelyn murmured, tapping the glass vial of clear fluid. "Most babies who survive severe prenatal hypoxia suffer from delayed motor development. He’s truly a miracle."
"Prenatal hypoxia?" Clara’s hand stopped mid-air. Her eyes narrowed. "I never put that in his public medical profile. The press only reported that I was injured in a slip-and-fall."
Evelyn didn't pause. She fitted the fine needle onto the syringe. "Oh, medical records in private high-risk circles are easily shared among elite practitioners, Mrs. Montgomery. We always know the full history."
Maya, who was sitting at the breakfast bar reviewing the surveillance footage from the neighboring building, suddenly paused the video frame. She zoomed in on the figure’s left hand on the fire escape from the night before. On the wrist of the figure was a tiny, faded scar—the shape of a crescent moon.
Maya glanced up. Evelyn was rolling up her sleeve to swab Leo’s chubby arm with an alcohol pad.
On Evelyn’s wrist, just beneath a layer of heavy concealer that was beginning to smudge from perspiration, was the faint silhouette of a crescent moon.
"Julian! Marcus! GET HER AWAY FROM LEO!" Maya screamed, lunging across the kitchen counter.
Before anyone could react, Evelyn’s calm demeanor shattered. Her eyes flared with animalistic fury. Instead of injecting the baby, she swung the syringe toward Leo’s neck like an ice pick.
Clara moved with the primal, unthinking speed of a mother whose child was in the jaws of a wolf. She threw herself across the floor, shielding Leo with her entire body. The needle pierced deep into Clara’s shoulder muscle, releasing the cold sting of an unknown chemical.
Julian lunged forward, his forearm slamming into Evelyn’s jaw, knocking the older woman violently against the glass coffee table. The table shattered in an explosion of tempered shards. Marcus drew his weapon, pinning the woman to the ground with his tactical boot on her throat.
"Clara!" Julian fell to his knees, ripping the empty syringe from Clara’s shoulder. "What was in this?! WHAT DID SHE INJECT?!"

Maya grabbed the discarded vial from the floor, her eyes widening in horror as she read the chemical label written in smuggled Russian script: *Potassium Chloride with Vecuronium Bromide.* A paralytic cocktail designed to stop the diaphragm within three minutes.
