Chapter 12 - The Burned Cell and the Devil’s Proxy

The rain hit Chicago like a hammer against sheet metal. The flashing red and blue lights of forensic cruisers illuminated the outer razor-wire fence of Dwight Correctional Center. Julian and Maya walked alongside Detective Miller down the cold, subterranean corridor of the psych wing. The air smelled of burnt hair, scorched plastic, and bleach.

"How does a woman sentenced to life without parole walk out of a solitary confinement pod without a single alarm tripping?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low. Every muscle in his jaw was coiled like a steel trap. Clara and Leo were currently locked in the safe house twenty floors beneath the Montgomery Tower under twenty-four-hour armed guard, but Julian knew walls meant nothing to a monster who understood their every security protocol.

Detective Miller led them to Cell 402. The heavy steel door stood wide open, its electronic lock melted into a distorted slag of copper and plastic. Inside, the walls were covered in frantic, rhythmic scratch marks—hundreds of tally marks carved into the concrete with a sharpened plastic spoon. But what dominated the room was the scorched bed.

"The thermal sensors were bypassed using an infrared reflector plate," Miller explained, gesturing toward a charred contraption attached to the ceiling vent. "She didn't just escape, Julian. She had inside help. High-level help. Someone with administrative override codes wiped the surveillance logs for twenty minutes during the Tuesday midnight shift."

Maya knelt near the edge of the cot, shining a pocket ultraviolet light across the floor. "Look here. Traces of surgical disinfectant and fluorinated hydro-silicone. These are hospital-grade compounds used exclusively in private reconstructive clinics."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. "Reconstructive clinics? You're saying she changed her face?"

"She didn’t just change her face, Mr. Montgomery," Miller sighed heavily, handing Julian a charred plastic file retrieved from the vent. "Three days ago, a Jane Doe died in a fire at a cosmetic surgical center in Schaumburg. The records were wiped, but the dental prints matching Victoria’s were planted on the corpse. It was designed to look like she died during a botch operation. But the DNA in the ashes belonged to an unidentified drifter. Victoria wanted us to believe she was dead while she assumed a completely new identity."

"And who funded this?" Julian shouted, throwing the file onto the metal table. "Her assets were frozen! Every bank account tied to her name was liquidated and placed into Clara’s maternal trust!"

Miller looked Julian dead in the eye. "Her personal accounts were frozen. But your father’s secondary offshore trusts in the Cayman Islands—the ones set up under the shell company *Nautilus Global*—were unlocked last Monday using an encrypted physical biometric key."

Maya gasped, looking at Julian. "The biometric key... Julian, didn't your father leave two physical keys? One to you, and one hidden in the family vault?"

Julian staggered back against the cold concrete wall. The family vault was located in the basement of the lakeside estate—the very estate where they had just celebrated Leo’s birthday. Victoria had not just escaped; she had already walked through their home before they even knew she was free.

"She’s not running away," Julian whispered in horror, the realization hitting him like a freight train. "She’s hunting Clara. And she’s already inside our lives."
