Chapter 1 - The Push into the Abyss

The penthouse terrace of the Olympus Tower was bathed in golden twilight, a sanctuary of champagne flutes, velvet lounge chairs, and glittering laughter. Sixty floors above the roaring arteries of Chicago, the elite had gathered to celebrate the imminent arrival of the Montgomery heir. Classical strings drifted through the balmy evening air, blending with the clinking of crystal and the soft lap of the infinity pool that seemed to spill directly into the void of the skyline.

Clara Montgomery rested in her custom ergonomic wheelchair near the pool’s perimeter. At twenty-eight weeks pregnant, a severe pelvic stress fracture suffered during a freak staircase fall three weeks earlier had robbed her of her mobility. Her physician had strictly forbidden her from putting weight on her legs, prescribing absolute caution. Yet, despite the heavy plaster cast hugging her right leg from ankle to hip and the orthopedic restraint strap keeping her securely centered in the chair, Clara glowed. Her soft ivory silk gown fell gracefully over her swollen belly. She rested her hands on the gentle curve of her stomach, feeling the rhythmic, fluttering kicks of her unborn son.

"Julian is completely enraptured by the investors tonight," a voice purred from directly behind her.

Clara smiled, tilting her head slightly back. Her sister-in-law, Victoria, stood over her. Victoria was a masterpiece of cold, sculpted perfection: sharp cheekbones, lips painted the color of dried blood, and an emerald satin dress that clung to her frame like serpent scales. As Julian’s elder sister, Victoria had managed the family’s venture capital empire with an iron fist—until their patriarch’s will decreed that the controlling interest would pass to Julian the moment he produced a legitimate heir.

"He's excited," Clara murmured softly, her fingers tracing her belly. "He wants to build something permanent for our little boy. Thank you for setting up this corner for me, Victoria. The breeze from the pool is wonderful."

"Is it?" Victoria whispered. Her tone had suddenly lost its velvet charm. It had flattened into something frigid, clinical, and ancient.

Clara felt the faint hairs on the back of her neck prickle. "Victoria?"

Victoria leaned down until her lips brushed the shell of Clara’s ear. Her breath smelled faintly of peppermint and vintage champagne. "A boy," Victoria hissed, words dripping with unadulterated venom. "A parasite who will steal thirty years of my blood, sweat, and tears with a single cry. Did you really think I would let an orphan from nowhere inherit my family’s empire just because your womb was lucky?"

Terror shot through Clara like an electric current. Her breath seized. "What are you—"

"Julian will mourn," Victoria whispered, her hands gripping the rubberized handles of the wheelchair. "He will break. And when he is broken, he will come home to me. Say goodbye to your bastard, Clara."

Clara opened her mouth to scream, her hand clawing desperately at the armrest. But before sound could vibrate in her vocal cords, Victoria kicked off the wheel locks with brutal precision and shoved the wheelchair with every ounce of demonic strength she possessed.

The world tilted into a sickening freefall.

The wheelchair lurched forward over the wet travertine tiles. Clara’s scream was torn from her throat as the front wheels hit the edge of the infinity pool, teetered for a fraction of a heartbeat, and then plunged into the sapphire depths.

The shock of the water was instantaneous and suffocating. Clara hit the surface with an explosive crash. Thousands of foaming bubbles erupted around her face as the heavy, battery-assisted motorized wheelchair dragged her downward like an anchor of solid lead. The evening sky, the neon-lit clouds, the glittering lights of the penthouse—all of it shattered into distorted ripples above her as she was pulled into the silent, suffocating dark.
