Chapter 18 - BREACH AND CLEAR

Above ground, the rain had turned into a howling gale. Elena sat in the communications shed at the surface level of the bunker, her fingers flying over an exposed tactical patch panel. She had rerouted the facility’s fire-suppression telemetry, venting high-pressure Halon gas through the secondary ventilation shafts to force Thomas Vance’s tactical perimeter guards into the open.

Through the night-vision monitors, she watched Daniel move through the shadows of the surface perimeter like a ghost.

Daniel did not use lethal force when he breached the guard station. He moved with the terrifying, economical violence of an operator who had spent twenty years hunting corrupt contractors in hostile combat zones. A quick palm-strike to an armed sentry’s solar plexus, a sweep of the legs, and a swift zip-tie binding wrists and ankles took down the first two men in less than eight seconds.

"Elena," Daniel’s voice crackled through her earpiece. "Surface guards neutralized. Thomas brought at least eight men. They’ve already blown the upper stairwell doors. They’re heading down the auxiliary elevator shaft."

"I've cut the main elevator power, Daniel," Elena replied, monitoring the facility's power-grid schema. "They’re using fast-ropes in the ventilation shaft. You have three minutes before they reach the vault level."

"Where is Sophie?"

"She’s at the primary vault door on Sub-Level Three," Elena said, her voice tightening as she watched an active thermal signature on her screen. "Margaret is with her. And Daniel... Sophie’s vitals on the biometric console are spiking. Margaret is forcing her to unlock the system."

"I'm on my way," Daniel breathed, his heavy boots pounding down the emergency concrete stairwell.

Inside the vault chamber below, Sophie stood before the glowing terminal. The mechanical needle of the capillary blood-scanner extended from the console, glowing with a soft, predatory ultraviolet light.

"Put your finger on the sensor, Sophie," Margaret repeated, her voice rising above the blaring alarms. "Now! Before Thomas’s butchers get down here!"

Sophie looked at the console, then looked at Margaret.

"You told me that courage was about power, Margaret," Sophie said, her voice astonishingly calm amid the deafening sirens. "My mother told me that courage was noticing when something doesn't belong and asking why."

Sophie grabbed the heavy ceramic coffee mug that had been left on the technician’s desk by the vault console, raised it above her head, and brought it crashing down onto the glass biometric scanner with all the force in her body.

The terminal exploded in a shower of sparks and shattered glass. The console let out a high-pitched, warbling squeal as an automated security protocol engaged.

*LOCKDOWN INITIATED,* the automated voice droned. *FAIL-SAFE ACTIVATED. SYSTEM WILL PURGE IN ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SECONDS.*

Margaret let out a primal scream of rage, lunging toward Sophie with her fingers hooked like claws. "You idiot! You've killed us all!"

Before Margaret could touch her, the heavy blast doors at the end of the corridor blew inward with a concussive shockwave of C4.
