Chapter 16 - THE CIPHER IN THE BIBLE

Back in the wreckage of the quarry, Elena stood leaning against Daniel’s truck, a field dressing taped firmly over the cut on her forehead. Thomas Vance had slipped into the woods during the confusion of the approaching sirens, but he had left behind something far more valuable: his encrypted satellite phone and an old, leather-bound family Bible that had been ejected from his crushed SUV.

Daniel slammed the tailgate shut, his face pale under the gray sky. "Local dispatch confirmed a Blackthorne-owned Gulfstream is prepped on the runway at a private strip near Manassas. If they get Sophie airborne, jurisdiction won't mean a damn thing. Interpol won't touch a high-level military dispute until it clears the Hague."

"They aren't going to Manassas," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the Bible open across her lap.

Daniel turned to her, bewildered. "Elena, the flight plan was filed thirty minutes ago."

"It's a decoy," Elena said, her fingers tracing the handwritten family tree on the Bible’s frontispiece. "Look at the dates, Daniel. Your mother and Thomas never trusted electronic storage. When Margaret built the offshore network in 2014, she used a double-blind alphanumeric cipher based on your father's flight logs from Desert Storm."

Elena pulled out the thumb drive Marcus had given her, plugging it into Daniel’s ruggedized field laptop on the truck's hood. The screen flickered to life, showing endless streams of raw hex data extracted from the Pentagon archive.

"Your father’s callsign was *Viper-Seven*," Elena explained rapidly, typing with clinical precision. "Margaret’s shadow routing codes didn't use Sophie’s legal name. They used Sophie’s baptismal coordinates. Thomas thinks the vault is in Zurich because Margaret leaked that rumor ten years ago to keep him hunting shadows. But the actual physical depository..."

She hit enter. A satellite map zoomed into the Virginia hills, focusing on an decommissioned Cold War communications bunker.

"Sugar Grove," Daniel whispered, the color draining from his face. "The old naval annex. My father helped design the underground communications shelter there before he retired."

"Margaret isn't running away, Daniel," Elena said, closing the laptop with a definitive snap. "She broke out of that medical center because she knew Thomas was coming for the cipher. She’s using Sophie as bait to lure Thomas into the bunker so she can eliminate him and reclaim the syndicate."

Daniel drew his service weapon, checking the slide with a crisp, lethal motion. "She’s sacrificing Sophie to finish a war she started twenty years ago."

Elena looked at her husband, her dark eyes blazing with an unyielding ferocity that made Daniel remember why he had fallen in love with her in an audit room a lifetime ago.

"Not today she isn't," Elena said. "Get in the truck."
